What if Germany had invested in nuclear power? A comparison between the German energy policy the last 20 years and an alternative policy of investing in nuclear power

Germany has one of the most ambitious energy transition policies dubbed ‘Die Energiewende’ to replace nuclear- and fossil power with renewables such as wind-, solar- and biopower. The climate gas emissions are reduced by 25% in the study period of 2002 through 2022. By triangulating available information sources, the total nominal expenditures are estimated at EUR 387 bn, and the associated subsidies are some EUR 310 bn giving a total nominal expenditures of EUR 696 bn. Alternatively, Germany could have kept the existing nuclear power in 2002 and possibly invest in new nuclear capacity. The analysis of these two alternatives shows that Germany could have reached its climate gas emission target by achieving a 73% cut in emissions on top of the achievements in 2022 and simultaneously cut the spending in half compared to Energiewende. Thus, Germany should have adopted an energy policy based on keeping and expanding nuclear power.

The Russians — “Putin” if you like — were right all along. The Ukraine crisis is merely the latest phase of the West’s long campaign to surround the Russian Federation up to its borders, destabilize it and finally subvert it. Regime change in Moscow was and remains the final objective.

Ukraine's public debt has doubled in two years of war. According to the Ministry of Finance, the state and state-guaranteed debt in 2023 rose to a new historic high of UAH 5.519 trillion or $145.32 billion. Over the year, the figure in hryvnia increased by 35.4% (UAH 1.444 trillion), in currency - by 30.4% ($33.9 billion).

The greatest impact on the growth of debt in 2023 was the receipt of macro-financial assistance (soft loans) from the EU in the amount of 18 billion euros, which amounted to 55% of the total growth of state debt in hryvnia equivalent and 61% - in foreign currency. Expenditures on servicing the state debt in 2023 amounted to 8.2% of the general fund expenditures of the state budget (compared to 6.5% in 2022 and 12.4% in 2021).

Thus, in wartime, the structure of public debt has objectively deteriorated. Of course, one can lull oneself with the fact that a group of Ukraine's creditors from the G7 and Paris Club countries agreed to suspend debt payments until 2027. But this is a weak consolation.

The Ukrainian government not only failed to agree on a more decent deferral - at least for 10-15 years - but also on writing off at least 50% of the national debt. Moreover, they could not agree on reducing the interest rate. And all this avalanche of debts will fall on the country in 2027.

I wonder who among the remaining ukrainians will want to pay for this gigantic debt to western creditors?

But Russia has been artificially gimped by the U.S. for over 100 years, through a variety of economic terrorism in the form of endless sanctions, embargoes, and everything in between. They continually try to keep it “down and out” and marginalized like they did to the Chinese in the 1800s, primarily because without such artificial restrictions, Russia’s vector is always to emerge at the top of the economic heap.

The point is that, only such an oppressive regimen of subversion and sabotage can keep Russia “down and out,” as Lord Ismay once said. If this were to cease, it would mean the end of the West, because the entire financial ‘house of cards’ the West relies on is in some ways a fragile mirage which relies on this constant “unfair play.” Were the other superpowers allowed to spread their wings, the laws of the zero-sum-game would necessitate the loss of every advantage of the West, leading to its unraveling.

To understand how exactly that would happen, one must understand the infamous ‘exorbitant privilege’ of the U.S. dollar, and how it relies on the artificial suppression of other competing currencies. And most importantly, how it’s responsible for the entirety of American exceptionalism, military and economic profligacy, etc. It grants the overpowering ability to print infinite money without incurring inflation, which makes the U.S. nearly invulnerable.

This is why Russia can never be allowed to have its say or ‘freedom’ to act as it wants, be it economic or otherwise. For instance, the freedom to have economic sovereignty in regard to Europe—i.e. Nord Stream, etc.

Europe has now become the battleground for this clash of differing world systems. Everything the U.S. has hangs by a deceptively thin thread. Bloomberg reports that European plastic producers (and plastic is the base of the modern economy) are cutting back on production and states the beautiful thing:

To understand: the cost of the issue is about 40 billion dollars a year in lost exports (net). And all just on a single example of a single industry.

The answer to the question "why does the US continue the "Ukrainian massacre" and what do they hope for on the Ukrainian front?" doesn't really have much to do with Ukraine itself. The Americans are now hitting the European economy (from automobile manufacturing to petrochemicals) with control shots, and they need to make sure that nothing grows back there. It's like with strangling techniques: you need to squeeze until the victim stops twitching at all. And in order for the European industrial economy to shake off its hooves, the "Ukrainian case" must be prolonged. It won't be long now, in 2024 everything will probably be closed.
