I did a half-hour long telling of the myth of Palamedes at Floralia today. It still felt rushed. I'm going to have to turn this into a full hour show. I think Palamedes deserves it.

Working titles:
"The hero that Homer forgot"

"Palamedes and the Invention of Everything"

Just read an article about a theory that the myth of Asclepius and the story of Alcestis used to make one continuous epic. Which kinda make perfect sense.

The story starts with Asclepius killed by the gods for trying to bring back the dead with medicine.

And it ends with a drunk Heracles bringing back the dead by beating up the god of Death and breaking some of his ribs.

Resurrection. Best accomplished with booze and wrestling.

I managed to complete this yeat's A to Z Challenge, mostly because I scheduled the posts ahead of time.

I also decided to announce my theme for NEXT year... mostly because it will take a whole lot of reading to pull it off :)

Everyone is so hyped about Hades and Persephone when Dionysos and Ampelos is right there

Today's #mythology moment:

The Greek army sailing to Troy stopped on the island of Delos. The king of Delos, a son of Apollo, foresaw that the Trojan War will only be won 10 years later.

So, he invited the Greeks to spend 9 years in his kingdom partying, instead of fighting.
They declined.

Imagine, they could have saved 9 years of war on a technicality...

I am barely ready for this year's A to Z Blogging, but I am already super excited for next year's theme 😅

I just decided that I'll do another reading challenge - reading 26 epics about women.

And yes, I already have a list. 26 traditional epics with female protagonists from around the world.

Hopefully a year will be enough to read all of them 😄

I just found out that there is an entire folktale type where a husband (going on a long journey) asks Satan to guard his wife's modesty. The devil spends the rest of the story chasing and scaring various lovers away, until he gives up the task as hopeless.

Is it just me, or would this be a great premise for a supernatural romance story 🤣🤣

Finally watched #Damsel

And it hurt me both as a #DnD player and as a storyteller at the same time

THAT DRAGON TALKS, ROLL YOUR PERSUASION CHECK

#ouch #storytelling

Something about the hype around #Damsel just rubs me the wrong way. The whole "this is no fairy tale" spin is annoying. Have you ever read more than two fairy tales in your life? I can list you hundreds of traditional stories where women kill monsters and save themselves. Seriously.

Quit shitting on folklore without knowing it.

Also, I recently heard the term "add a sword feminism" and it is very accurate.

#TFW you do three hours of research into a story, only to finally remember you have already blogged about it two years ago... 😅

(granted, didn't dig this deep last time...)

It's kinda funny when you do a Valentine's Day storytelling event with myths about love and dragons, and there are couples sitting in the audience with ash on their forehead 😄😄

#ValentinesDay #AshWednesday #storytelling #mythology

Happy #LunarNewYear! We are entering the Year of the Dragon.

So, I wrote a blog post of my favorite dragon folktales and legends where dragons are friendly and helpful. Or even falling in love ❤️

My new favorite quote, from the footnotes for Antoninus Liberalis' #mythology book:

"A hooked line cast into antiquity pulls in many other lines, all sources of red herrings!"

😂

It is always kinda funny when people try to relate to me as a storyteller by bashing Disney, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings,
D&D, etc.

Like, bless your heart, just because I tell folktales and legends, I don't have to hate pop culture. Also, I'm a huge nerd. Wrong tree, darling.

I am reading this Icelandic folktale where a prince cursed into being a dog is saved when another prince lets him sleep in his bed on his wedding night.

I am here for this fairy tale polycule. 😄

Also, while on the topic of King Arthur legends:

Please for the love of god someone translate Escanor to English!

We have an actual Arthurian love-hate romance for grumpy Sir Kay. How is this not a thing yet?!

I am reading Icelandic Christmas tales and there is an unreasonable number of hands being chopped off... 😆😆

Fa la la la la aaaaaaargh

Freezing rain coated the streets with ice. I had to climb a hill to a gig, literally pulling myself hand over hand along the fence posts... 😅😅
I told a Hungarian tale called The Kingdom of Ice. Felt like the appropriate choice🌨❄️🌬

The theme of our next #MythOff storytelling event will be Dragons & Love (since it's on Valentine's Day).
I just started researching the legend of Lake Tazawa.

It started with one dragon, and now there are two dragons, three lakes, and a 10th century volcanic eruption.

I love my job.

So here's a question I'm curious about today:

Do you remember how/where you first encountered Greek mythology?

(It took me a while to remember mine)

I am researching a Tabwa myth about aardvarks that tunnel between our world and the otherworld.

Out: going "down a rabbit hole" for research

In: going "into the aardvark tunnels" for research

Sounds much better doesn't it

Nobody warned me that once I become a parent all the stories in my Christmas repertoire are going to make me cry.

What the heck.

This book just arrived 🥰
I read the first volume for Following Folktales Around the World, and it was one of the highlights of the entire challenge. I am super excited for the new stories 🥰🥰🥰
You can read my blog post about the first volume here:

Hi, I'm a storyteller and here is today's #StorytellingPSA:

No, there is no "original" primary source on Greek mythology that has Persephone walking into the Underworld willingly. Sorry, Tumblr.

#mythology #storytelling #MythologyMonday

Antoninus Liberalis keeps on giving. Today's favorite myth is "Hercules talks a himbo into dumping his abusive boyfriend."

#mythology #folklore #storytelling #classics

So was anyone going to tell me that the "sacrificial virgin rescued from dragon by dashing hero" story existed as a gay love story in ancient times, or was I supposed to just find out from Antoninus Liberalis myself?...

(Alcyoneus and Eurybarus, fyi)

"Murmeltier" (Marmot) is a tale from the earliest Grimm collection that seems to be a retelling of a French fairy tale by Mme de Villeneuve (famously the author of Beauty and the Beast).

Murmeltier is a "Frau Holle" type tale, with a heroine who has a magical emotional support beaver. It also features a miller who marries a male earth spirit and lives with him in domestic bliss, raising their son together. It's quite the fun story.
