And just in case (having read the previous post) you were thinking a healthy diet is all about choice.... what we actually see is that to maintain a healthy diet takes an impossible proportion of disposable income for the poorest 20% of the population.... no-one can spend 70% of their income on food when they also are confronted with rising fuel prices & record rents....

We are living in a country which is hurtling back to the social structures of Victorian Britain.

#Food #health
Chart: A healthy diet is unaffordable for the poorest families in the UK. Share of disposable income required to afford the Eayewell Guide by inomce quartile (%)

Shows for the poorest 20% of households it would take 70% of income for those with children & 42% for those without.

in the top 20% the proportions are 12% & 10%

The #plastic paradox: How plastics went from #elephant saviors to eco-villains

Do the benefits of plastics outweigh the costs?

January 23, 2024

"It was 1869, and something needed to be done.

"With the price of #ivory skyrocketing, billiard ball manufacturers were scrambling for an alternative. The prized material derived from #ElephantTusks was being used to craft such things as knife handles, piano keys, dice, dominoes, chessmen, and yes, billiard balls. Now, with elephants growing scarce from overhunting, the wonder material was becoming difficult to procure and unreasonably expensive. After all, one tusk would yield just four or five balls. Leading pool table manufacturer Phelan and Collender offered $10,000 ($225,000 today) to any inventor who could discover a replacement for ivory.

"Albany inventor John Wesley Hyatt answered the call, molding together camphor, nitrocellulose, and alcohol under extreme pressure. His concoction, called #celluloid, was one of the first synthetic plastics. While Hyatt’s creation proved an unwieldy material for billiard balls — insufficiently durable and mildly explosive when struck — it inspired others to formulate something better. A few decades later, American chemist Leo Baekeland came up with the petroleum-derived #Bakelite. It became the first commercially successful synthetic plastic, and very likely saved elephants from extinction.

"More than a century later, this story has morphed into an intriguing irony…With their creation, plastics probably saved countless species — both plants and animals — from extinction. Derived from byproducts of #FossilFuel production, which had previously gone unused, the invention of synthetic plastics meant that humans no longer had to pillage the living #NaturalWorld to produce various products for a technologically advancing global society. Fast-forward to today: Plastics are demonized for eroding the environment and endangering human health, prompting many to wonder if we’d be better off without them."

Insurers’ denial rates are a critical measure of how reliably they pay for customers’ care. But they remain mostly secret to the public.

Federal and state regulators have done little to change that.

Boutique primary care clinics are making the family doctor shortage worse

"In Canada, where universal health care is a cornerstone of our values, we are facing a primary care access crisis. The problem is multi-faceted and not just due to a decline in the number of licensed family doctors for the first time since the mid-1990s. The role of private primary care “boutique clinics” – and their effects on access and equity in the public system – must be considered."
Recently, a recruiter approached me with an enticing job offer: an income of $390,000 to $450,000 annually, plus a $50,000 signing bonus, to care for just 400 patients (a typical full-time panel is more than 1,200). The catch? This role was at a boutique clinic, operated by “one of Canada’s most recognized brands” and has clinics in B.C., Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland. The recruiter told me that the clinic offers a combination of “insured” services –regular family doctor visits covered by the public system – and “uninsured” services paid for by the patient via extra fees. These uninsured services, I was told, included “comprehensive health assessments” that focus on “prevention and wellness.”

Bird Flu jumps from Birds to Human in Louisiana [Patient hospitalized].

It is the first human H5N1 case detected in Louisiana. For now, the case is considered a "presumptive" positive until testing is confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health officials says “caution people to stay away from any sick or dead birds”.

A person in Louisiana is hospitalized with H5N1 bird flu after having contact with sick and dying birds suspected of carrying the virus.

Although the person has been hospitalized, their condition was not immediately reported. It's also unclear what kind of birds the person had contact with [wild, backyard or commercial birds]. Ars has reached out to Louisiana's health department and will update this piece with any additional information.

To date, at least 845 herds across 16 states have contracted the virus since March, including 630 in California, which detected its first dairy infections in late August.

At least 60 people in the US have been infected amid the viral spread this year. But the new case in Louisiana stands out. To date, nearly all of the human cases have been among poultry and dairy workers [unlike the new case in Louisiana] and almost all have been mild [also unlike the new case]. Most of the cases have involved conjunctivitis [pink eye] and/or mild respiratory and flu-like symptoms.

The problem with American health care in one graph... they spend more for worse results (measured in life expectancy).

No wonder Americans are dissatisfied with health insurers.... the gap between America & other counties can be measured either in lives shortened or in profits from health care (or, of course, both!)

Your brain can grow from reading and learning – e-books offer the same benefit as paper books

The image shows a wall of books stacked haphazardly, creating a visually stunning texture of various colors and sizes. The foreground is dominated by the densely packed books, while the background is mostly obscured by the sheer volume of literature. The location appears to be an outdoor book market, perhaps in a Spanish-speaking country, judging by some of the visible titles. The titles visible in the image show a mix of classic and contemporary literature, suggesting a wide diversity of literary preferences.
The number of people who read for fun appears to be steadily dropping. Fifty percent of UK adults say they don’t read regularly (up from 42 percent in 2015) and almost one in four young people aged 16 to 24 say they’ve never been readers, according to research by The Reading Agency.

Two regions in the left hemisphere of the brain, which are crucial for language, are different in people who are good at reading and are likely to be shaped by the habit.

Clearly, brain structure can tell us a lot about reading skills. Importantly, though, the brain is malleable—it changes when we learn a new skill or practice an already acquired one. Reading is likely to shape the structure of the left Heschl’s gyrus and temporal pole. So, if you want to keep your Heschl’s thick and thriving, pick up a good book and start reading.

Reading is the same whether you read an e-book or a paper book. The big difference is e-books are generally a lot more accessible, are cheaper, take up less space, and usually have some form of dictionary for quick word lookups.

There is really no excuse not to read: Books are freely available in libraries, many classics are in the public domain, and there are very diverse topics to cover ever possible interest type. Time though is typically the excuse most give, but this is also not very true, if you consider carefully what a 24-hour day looks like. I set aside 30 mins, when going to bed at night, to read. It also has the added bonus of relaxing the mind and readying it for sleep.
