Had my literary agent actually stipulate that for my projects, I wanted human editors, human audiobook narrators, human cover artists, or else I'd take my book elsewhere. Don't let #Publishing trick you into pretending they hate AI or are against AI because they love #AI and so, you need to be extra firm on this and yes, they are fighting us every step of the way.

ChatGPT Risks Misleading Journalism

ChatGPT's summaries risk harming journalism by misrepresenting facts, reducing website traffic, and raising copyright issues. Some publishers strike licensing deals, but ethical concerns persist. Full story at:

A pair of AI bots serving as news broadcasters get discontinued after two months. Whoever thought this would be a good idea?

“In the polarized months leading up to the election, the pair managed to inspire visceral, bipartisan contempt.”

#StorytellingPSA

AI as a research tool for storytelling is useless.

You ask it for folktales, it makes stories up. You ask it for sources for those tales, it makes books up. You ask for real books, it gives you books that don't contain the story you want.
It also misattributes made-up stories to existing cultures. Often indigenous ones.

I have had several conversations with actual storytellers using ChatGPT to find "authentic" myths and folktales. It scares me.

"Workers should have the right to know which of their data is being collected, who it's being shared by, and how it's being used. We all should have that right. That's what the actors' strike was partly motivated by: actors who were being ordered to wear mocap suits to produce data that could be used to produce a digital double of them, "training their replacement," but the replacement was a deepfake.

With a Trump administration on the horizon, the future of the FTC is in doubt. But the coalition for a new privacy law includes many of Trumpland's most powerful blocs – like Jan 6 rioters whose location was swept up by Google and handed over to the FBI. A strong privacy law would protect their Fourth Amendment rights – but also the rights of BLM protesters who experienced this far more often, and with far worse consequences, than the insurrectionists.

The "we do it with an app, so it's not illegal" ruse is wearing thinner by the day. When you have a boss for an app, your real boss gets an accountability sink, a convenient scapegoat that can be blamed for your misery.

The fact that this makes you worse at your job, that it loses your boss money, is no guarantee that you will be spared. Rich people make great marks, and they can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent. Markets won't solve this one – but worker power can."

“[Summarization tools incorporated into the search engines are] a boon for people seeking quick answers, but a bane for publishers. Disincentivizing curious users from clicking through to a news site for additional information—a trend called zero-click search—sends less traffic to media outlets that invest in the costly #reporting that #AI machines are scraping, strip-mining, and synthesizing.”

LinkedIn…where more half the posts on display are AI-generated.

#linkedin #ai #llm #socialnetwork
The Microsoft-owned social media site for business professionals has embraced AI, even offering LinkedIn Premium subscribers access to its own in-house AI writing tools that can “rewrite” posts, profiles, and direct messages. The initiative appears to be working: Over 54 percent of longer English-language posts on LinkedIn are likely AI-generated, according to a new analysis shared exclusively with WIRED by the AI detection startup Originality AI. It’s just that the corporate-speak style of AI writing on the platform can be tricky to distinguish from genuine human-penned Thought Leader Blogging.

Originality scanned a sample of 8,795 public LinkedIn posts over 100 words long that were published from January 2018 to October 2024. For the first few years, the use of AI writing tools on LinkedIn was negligible. A major increase then occurred at the beginning of 2023. “The uptick happened when ChatGPT came out,” says Originality CEO Jon Gillham. At that point, Originality found the number of likely AI-generated posts had spiked 189 percent; it has since leveled off.

"While the Executive Branch pushes agencies to leverage private AI expertise, our concern is that more and more information on how those AI models work will be cloaked in the nigh-impenetrable veil of government secrecy. Because AI operates by collecting and processing a tremendous amount of data, understanding what information it retains and how it arrives at conclusions will all become incredibly central to how the national security state thinks about issues. This means not only will the state likely make the argument that the AI’s training data may need to be classified, but they may also argue that companies need to, under penalty of law, keep the governing algorithms secret as well.

As the memo says, “AI has emerged as an era-defining technology and has demonstrated significant and growing relevance to national security. The United States must lead the world in the responsible application of AI to appropriate national security functions.” As the US national security state attempts to leverage powerful commercial AI to give it an edge, there are a number of questions that remain unanswered about how much that ever-tightening relationship will impact much needed transparency and accountability for private AI and for-profit automated decision making systems."

"I never like to root against fellow reporters, but I’ll admit I was also happy to see them go. While James and Rose did not actively supplant any existing newsroom jobs, I was concerned that the effort diverted resources that could be used on traditional media expenses, like human reporters, photographers, and editors.

The Garden Island was severely underresourced—for much of my time working there, I was one of only two reporters covering an island of 73,000. The paper was purchased earlier this year by the conglomerate Carpenter Media Group, which controls more than 100 local outlets throughout North America.

Caledo, while declining to disclose how much it was paid, said that new ads embedded in the broadcasts would offset the cost of the program. However, it does not appear as though OPI was able to sell a single ad on the videos."

"Microsoft Office, like many companies in recent months, has slyly turned on an “opt-out” feature that scrapes your Word and Excel documents to train its internal AI systems. This setting is turned on by default, and you have to manually uncheck a box in order to opt out.

If you are a writer who uses MS Word to write any proprietary content (blog posts, novels, or any work you intend to protect with copyright and/or sell), you’re going to want to turn this feature off immediately.

I won’t beat around the bush. Microsoft Office doesn’t make it easy to opt out of this new AI privacy agreement, as the feature is hidden through a series of popup menus in your settings:

On a Windows computer, follow these steps to turn off “Connected Experiences”: File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings > Optional Connected Experiences > Uncheck box: “Turn on optional connected experiences”"

"Niantic, the company behind the extremely popular augmented reality mobile games Pokémon Go and Ingress, announced that it is using data collected by its millions of players to create an AI model that can navigate the physical world.

In a blog post published last week, first spotted by Garbage Day, Niantic says it is building a “Large Geospatial Model.” This name, the company explains, is a direct reference to Large Language Models (LLMs) Like OpenAI’s GPT, which are trained on vast quantities of text scraped from the internet in order to process and produce natural language. Niantic explains that a Large Geospatial Model, or LGM, aims to do the same for the physical world, a technology it says “will enable computers not only to perceive and understand physical spaces, but also to interact with them in new ways, forming a critical component of AR glasses and fields beyond, including robotics, content creation and autonomous systems. As we move from phones to wearable technology linked to the real world, spatial intelligence will become the world’s future operating system.”"

"Just Google it!" Is no longer an acceptable answer when someone asks a question. Google's LLM-driven responses are neither accurate nor trustworthy. People are a much better source of information now. As always, verify with secondary sources.

No. #Google #AI devs should. PLEASE!

"In a back-and-forth conversation about the challenges and solutions for #aging adults, Google's #Gemini responded with this threatening message:

Google’s Gemini AI Chatbot Finally Has an iPhone App

Three smartphone screenshots: Left one shows a white screen with the prompt text “Hello, M”. The middle screen feedback from Gemini giving feedback about a phone repair image request and showing a suggested image. The third screen is black with the text “Live” at the top and hold and end buttons at the bottom like a phone call is in progress.
Billed as a way to converse with Google’s AI, it’s kind of like using speech-to-text, but without having to press a microphone icon before each question. Just say your questions out loud, and Gemini will respond to them in real time, incorporating context from your previous questions.

Exclusive to the iPhone app is some clever use of the Dynamic Island. While you’re talking to Gemini, you’ll see icons in the Dynamic island indicating that Live is still active and whether it’s listening to you.

So far I’ve been Gemini the most useful for decent answers to things, including helping out with getting various code snippets sorted out. But it is pretty good for most things you’d ask of any smart speaker.

I see it can also be used to report road conditions and issues in Waze, something which I need to try instead of doing the three button presses on the car dashboard.
