Good morning to you all from a lovely sunny day here in Tokyo.

Hard to believe I made this photo with ballerina Mone Ohashi almost a decade ago. Time sure does fly.

She was such fun to make some photos with.

This was kind of an outtake from our shoot. Nice to find it in the archive.

Have a great day.

A portrait orientation photograph of Japanese ballerina, Mone Ohashi, made in 2015, in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo.

Mone is on the bridge that crosses the main road from the park to the event space just north west of NHK's HQ in Shibuya. Her background is a wonderful group of autumn trees, with yellow foliage.

She has a transparent umbrella in her hand and is perfectly poised on her right point, holding the umbrella up into a section of sky perfectly framed by the trees above. She's wearing a lilac tutu and dark purple leotard.

Good morning, good people of Mastodon.

I trust the day is treating you well. If it isn't, tell it from me to get its shit together and be nice.

Haven't had time to get out and track down autumn here yet.

So, here's some from last year.

Details in the ALT.

Have a great day

A landscape orientation photo made during the autumn of 2023, at Todoroki Shrine in Tokyo, Japan.

We're looking straight up into the momiji (maple) trees overhead. From left and right, the boughs of two trees are converging in the centre of the frame. The blackness of their branches the threads by which the whole frame of the photo is held together. The red leaves cover almost the whole frame, save for two sections in the middle top and middle bottom. Some of the leaves are brightly backlit. Some less so. The reds are vivid. It7s perhaps the last week of autumn flourish in these trees.
A square cropped photo made during the autumn of 2023, at Todoroki Shrine in Tokyo, Japan.

It's the very last light of the day. And what a day it has been. This last light is magnificent. The foreground - a fence, a Japanese shrine lantern, some small trees - is all in silhouette. Sections of the trees overhead which aren't catching the sunset are silhouetted, too. A little of the yellow and orange colors of some of the leaves is still coming through as dusk falls. The clouds in the sky are dramatically kissed by the most beautiful deep pink hues. It's silent at the shrine. Myself and two other people are standing in the silence. In awe.
A portrait orientation photo made during the autumn of 2023, at Todoroki Shrine in Tokyo, Japan.

This was made with an 80-200mm lens on my Nikon. At the 200mm end. So it's more of a detail of the leaves, with the tree itself reduced to bokeh in the background. The layers of red momiji (maple) leaves are a brilliant red. A branch full of them in the middleground of the photo is in sharp focus. Some leaves nearer to me are bokeh. The last of the sunlight, in the background, is rendered in golden bokeh balls.
A panoramic photo comprised of six separate vertically shot frames stitched together, made during the autumn of 2023, at Todoroki Shrine in Tokyo, Japan.

This was shot at a short telephoto focal length - 105mm - and the same plane of focus was maintained across all of the individual photos.

I like working in panorama like this: the perspective, viewing angle and depth of field of the long lens but the wide view you get when you shoot a wide angle of multiple frames and stitch them.

A Japanese shrine lantern is the focus of the shot. It's lit, as dusk is approaching. We're standing on the deck behind the shrine's main buildings, at the top of the stairs that head down into the nearby ravine.

Hence, we're at tre canopy height. It's a wonderful viewpoint. One of my favourites for autumn tree shots in Tokyo.

Three or four trees are in the photo. At varying distances from the camera. Their trunks and branches are rendered a deep black, as I've pitched the exposure of the photo towards the bright elements of the scene.

The sun is about to set. The last burst of light from it is right behind the lantern. The leaves on all the trees are backlit and their rich golden hues - from yellow through to deep red - give the whole scene a wonderful warmth.

The road home: Akagi Kogen, Gunma, Japan.

A fave photo from an autumn shoot up in Akagi, November 2019.

Had been a lovely day photographing the forest park and some of the peaks there. This was the last photo on my way home.

A vertical format photograph made in Akagi, Gunma, Japan in November of 2019. I'm standing on a road, looking west towards the mountains on the other side of the valley, which you can see in the top of the frame. The road undulates down the hill until about the middle of the photo. Where there's a car in the left lane, heading down the hill. It's tail lights are on. The trees that border the road form an area of deepp shadow. The last light of the day only illuminating the centre-line and lines at the edges of the road. The mountains in the background are layered into the distance, in various hues of orange. A line of telegraph poles runs down the left side of the road.

Tokyo Yellows.

Photo from a few years ago, made in the downtime during a shoot with one of my pharma clients, from the 19th floor window of the office we were using as a studio that day.

Gingko trees. Yellow bits of buildings.... once you start focusing on a colour, you just keep seeing it.

A landscape orientation photograph made from the 19th floor of a building in Tokyo's Nihonbashi district. We are looking north, down into the city through the 80mm lens on my Hasselblad H4D-40 camera. The Ueno-bound section of the motoroway snakes from bottom right up to middle top left of the frame. Yellow gingko trees are dotted throughout the scene, as it's late autumn. Sections of several of the buildings in the scene also have yellow features. Creating a scene where many kilometres of city are pictured and throughout the whole scene there are splashes of yellow.

The past 12 months have been filled with drama, turmoil, triumph and joy, and photographers have captured it all. @time sees a through-line in the images it's curated for its top 100 photos of the year feature. "A tautness runs through the collection — the tension of conflict, the anxiety over outcome, anticipation of excitement or in possibility. Somehow, these photographers are able to capture that coiled feeling and hold it within the four walls of a frame. Be it by impeccable timing or intentional framing, they have created a time capsule that feels as if it’s about to be opened," write the team. Here are all the photos, from Evan Gershkovich walking towards the friends and colleagues who are greeting him after his year in captivity to Donald Trump, seconds after the assassination attempt in Butler, Pa.

I regularly pop into the garden to see if I convince any of the local birds to pose for me. The observant amongst you will realise that the large number of feathers, fungi, flowers & clouds on my timeline means they quite frequently refuse. Today I went out deliberately to take a photo of a cloud & BOOM. Bird action.

A photograph of a small bird, fairly sure it's a coal tit, sitting on a sunlit branch of an evergreen tree that stretches horizontally across the frame. The bird has a black head except for a triangular flash of white on the side. It's front is pale cream. The background is blurred green and grey of the tree and sky beyond, and on the right are green needles on a small branch jutting up from the main one that the bird is sitting on. The bird is looking up and to the right, in a rather dignified pose.

#GutenMorgen Trötenland. ☕

Sometimes the Coast Guard escorts Washington State Ferries. I don't know if they do this for drill (likely) or maybe someone important is riding on the ferry. This photo was taken last Monday from the Edmonds waterfront. #photography #USCG #WSF #CoastGaurd #PugetSound #Edmonds #PNW #boats

Very long story short but I had to take a train to Arkansas to pick up my wife’s car. Happened to get to Chicago for a huge snow day. Pretty proud of this photo. It’s a color photo! #b&wphoto #photography #chicago
A photo of “cloud Gate” commonly known as “the bean” in Millennium Park in Chicago. It is snowing heavily and very foggy/cloudy. The photo looks like it is in black and white, but it’s a color shot.

Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a shrub native to the Southeastern US through Texas. It’s used widely by Seattle gardeners, taken with its vibrant purple berries which stand out in autumn after the leaves fall off. A lot of creatures eat the leaves and berries, and it is used by Native Americans as a medicinal plant.

Several branches of bright magenta clusters of American beautyberry arch over a sidewalk. The berries form tight masses that catch the eye as the dog and I walk by.
