ICE is teaching racist civilians to murder immigrants.

"The academy trains civilians to operate multiple firearms, use lethal force, perform surveillance on immigrants, and conduct raids while also acting as a public relations initiative to try and sway public opinion about ICE, CBP, and the HSI unit of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“We ran Border Patrol Citizen Academies back when I was an agent as well,” Jenn Budd, former Senior Border Patrol Agent, whistleblower, and author of Against the Wall told Unicorn Riot. “The entire goal is to indoctrinate locals into why it’s okay for us to violate people’s rights.”

The training materials... show where to strike people with batons to subdue them are but the tip of the iceberg... Deadly force is the primary focus of Citizens Academy training... Another presentation from 2021... says that the goal of this scenario is to teach about shooting an unarmed person."

Anyone else having issues tuning back into news/news comedy after election day?

Tried NPR, nope. John Stewart's "we've been here before" landed flat. Even tried to watch Seth Meyers' take, and I couldn't make it in 2 minutes, as soon as he started playing Cheetoh clips.

I don't feel like the past approaches work. I can't go back to "this is normal, it's funny, it's just politics as usual" after this. Feels like the calm before meteor impact.

There's no spice in #brevity - on the #insufficiency of abbreviated #media

Abstract

In the following I would like to take a brief look at a media phenomenon that has been spreading for some time, but which I have come across more often recently. The idea is that “brevity is the spice of life”. In my studies on social media, I have noticed a particular form of reductionism (albeit in the literal sense) that borders on “emptying out meaning” or “mutilating content”.

In the relevant groups on social media, for example, it has long been common practice to receive a “TL:DR” (“too long, did'nt read”) for posts that exceed a length of 3 sentences. In the comments, this rule may still make sense, but in the posts I have often been unable to understand how it is possible to “summarize” a complex issue, such as those often found in philosophy, in 3 sentences. “Does free will exist? Yes..., No..., Maybe...”

The posts that seemed to be “successful” were usually so abbreviated that the content was bordering on irrelevant or pointless. The effect of “unconditional consumption” of “fast food” seemed to have been seamlessly transferred to “fast read” and “fast think” in the text media. Everything that doesn't “kick” in 3 seconds has “f...ed up” (thank brevity that I didn't have to write out the word ?) Most people “almost don't care”.

All, I can’t tell you that it’s more important than ever right now to support the Observer and other local journalism. I mean, I’d thought Kamala Harris would win a narrow victory and that Trump wouldn’t do a whole lot better in Texas than he did in 2020. In other words, for the moment, I’m out of both the prediction game and the game of even just making confident statements. All I can say is that Trump’s explicit plan is to hurt specific people — undocumented immigrants spring first to mind, but they are one of many groups — and many of these people live in Texas. And that the Observer intends to be here, on the ground, exposing these harms as they play out. We did it last time, we plan to do it again, I suppose I can also say that investigative journalism, the bulk of what we do, isn’t terribly contingent on politics. Whoever’s in charge, they want to hide things; we dig, and we publish.

Insofar as it is practical to blame people for being uninformed due to corpo media, it is for a long time very infuriating to note that none of the shitlib comedians from Colbert, to Stewart, to the sometimes lefty Oliver, talked about Palestine genocide directly and how it was losing the Democrats enough of their voting base to tank the election.
