#MyThoughts (cont.)

Changing a country from a net importer to a net exporter of manufactured goods would require that the quality and prices of the goods be competitive on the world market.

1) Quality — there are many other countries manufacturing fantastic goods

2) Price — would the US compete (must consider cost factors like labor and COGS, which would rise w/ #tariffs )

… unless the country plans on boxing itself in and trading with itself

Little #PSA to combat #misinformation, because apparently half of #US #Citizens don't know this: #NATO is a #Military #Defense #Alliance between the #USA and #Canada and most of #Europe. The main rule for joining is that the country must be a stable #Democracy with protections on human rights. The main terms of the treaty are that, if one country is attacked unprovoked, on their own soil, the others must send immediate military assistance, and counties must keep up a minimum military to be able to both defend themselves and come to the defense of others.

NATO is not a #trade agreement, though it does facilitate trade agreements to encourage peace.

NATO is not an #expansionist force. NATO is a pro-democracy force.

NATO is not anti-Russia, as #Russia was invited to join in the 90s. #Putin is anti-NATO because it's effectiveness limits his power.

NATO has only been called into one war: the US invasion of Afghanistan, with the triggering event being 9/11, when the US was attacked directly.

Turkey-Syria trade surges in new year

As Ruchir Sharma (FT) argues, a new round of tariffs from the Court of Tangerine Tyrant may not result in negotiations or retaliations, but rather (as it did in his first term) encourage countries (and blocs) to pivot away from US markets.

as he notes:

'Since 2017, the US has abandoned talks on partnerships with the EU & Asia, and cut not a single new trade deal. Meanwhile, the EU has negotiated 8 agreements & China has concluded 9, including a landmark 15-nation partnership in Asia'

Q. what would happen if Trump decide pulls the US out of the WorldTrade Organisation?

The US has stymied the operation of the WTO's Appellate Court forcing members into other forms of less open trade arbitration, and certainly many critics would be happy to see the decline of the WTO in any case.... but:

we have seen how a world of un-managed trade turns out (in the first half of the C20th), so if the US did leave the WTO would we see history not repeating but maybe rhyming?

Hmmm.... might the UK join the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean convention, as a way of slowly rebuilding its trade relations with the EU.

The PEM allows its members to use inputs from other members (and EU countries) as part of their 'rules of origin' proportion to gain tariff-free access to the EU customs union.

This would reduce some (but by no means all) impediments to current UK to EU exports.... but is pretty tightly focussed so not to alarm rampant Brexiters too much!
