Hitting People in the Feels:
A quick roundup of some of the lovely reviews of The Gates of Polished Horn.

I'm really touched that this collection is working for readers. I was nervous to put some of these more serious and literary stories together with my usual blend of SFF and humor. But I guess it works. Thanks to @ilanderz for believing in the project!

Another lovely review of The Gates of Polished Horn! This book felt risky to me, because many of these stories are quite serious in tone, so it's nice to see long-time readers of my work appreciate it!

A wonderful surprise!
Rayner is showing his prowess as a genuine storyteller. The stories are at times subtle, at times dark, at times heartwarming and heartbreaking. He's got skills, and we as readers get to reap the benefits.

Started #reading James by Percival Everett last night. Kindle says I read a quarter of it already as I was really enjoying it and was instantly gripped. Another 2024 Booker Prize longlist #book
Cover the book James by Percival Everett. It has a burnt orange background colour with mainly black text and an old fashioned illustration of a black man wading through water with a bundle on a stick over his shoulder.

I'm re-reading 1984 and it feels very relevant to now. Orwell's #book isn't really #scifi, it's really a book about oppression and propaganda.

I'll do a blog on it I think. There are things to say about it.

There are socialists who say Orwell wasn't really a socialist, and they are probably right, but what Orwell gets so very right is how censorship works. By removing references to better things, people have no means to criticise current things. You can't say the current government is bad if you have no proof things were ever better.

As Orwell says: Who controls the past controls the future.

Well... I guess... I have a blog now! Now i can finally write down all my thoughts in epic length haha.

From bestselling author of The Shipping News comes one of the most celebrated short story collections of our time. Annie Proulx’s masterful language and fierce love of Wyoming are evident in Close Range, a powerful collection of stories which includes Brokeback Mountain.

Another story behind the stories in my new collection, The Gates of Polished Horn:

I've always admired Italo Calvino, particularly his experimental novel, Invisible Cities. So much so that one of those cities inspired one of the stories in the new book!

Brief Review Death in Fine Condition, Andrew #Cartmel

I'm of mixed opinions. Not up to the standards of the 'Vinyl Detective' series (centred around an obsession with #paperback crime stories) but fun. However my conflict stems from the fact that although the chief baddy is a very nasty man, the anti-heroine did start things by stealing his precious collection of crime books! No synpathy from us.

Fresh on my #blog. #BookReview — Ascension by Nicholas Binge
Some books allow you to be enveloped in them like a cuddle from a doughy grandmother. Others scream in your face obnoxiously like the shift manager at a McDonald's on a bank holiday weekend. This book is the latter.
