Looks like my next folktale collection is going to be about misunderstood animals 🥰😊 What are your favorite misunderstood, misrepresented, or underappreciated animals?

So by the way, the epic of Princess Fatima was an amazing read. But sadly the longest English translation to date only includes 11 episodes out of 455. And even those in an abridged version.

Who do we talk to about getting a fuller translation?...

#epics #WomensEpics #translation #literature #AmReading #folklore #women

Alright, since many of you asked so excitedly :)

#WomensEpics I have read so far:

Shirin Mama (Sibe people) - warrior girl defeats bandits and rescues orphaned children, becoming a goddess

Chandravati's Ramayana (Bengal) - 16th century retelling from Sita's perspective

Ochi-Bala (Altai people) - warrior maiden fights an evil sorcerer to protect her people

I'm currently reading The Tale of Princess Fatima - an Arabic epic about a warrior woman

I am reading the Altaic epic about the warrior maiden Ocy-Bala. She is described as "tall from birth", with broad shoulders and a wide back.

Hell yeah, buff lady :D

So, the #InternetArchive is down. With it, the Wayback Machine. And Open Library.

I am here chasing an obscure Philippine epic with a female protagonist published as an MA thesis in the 1970s and referenced in a book from the 1980s not available anywhere.

I know this is a very niche problem to have.

But it hurts.

Sometimes you discover that your partner's relationship goals differ from your own.

It's okay to break up under such circumstances, but that doesn't mean you should be a jerk about it.

German folk tale "The Ghostly Suitor on Hartenstein Castle". Drop me a line if you want a machine-readable transcript!

Another fun bit from the epic of Shirin Mama: the storyteller says that the hunting people of the old days measured time by the length of cooking different animals.

E.g. cooking a sparrow is a few minutes, cooking a rabbit is half an hour, cooking a sheep is one hour, etc.

(Honestly, genius)

Now I am wondering what the modern equivalent of this time keeping system would be... 😄 "Alright, I'll see you in two quesadillas and a pop tart!"

3 chapters in and this is already amazing.

Starts with Shirin's parents - an orphan boy who's a great archer, and a girl he teaches to hunt and fight. They fall in love while he helps her family. The storyteller says that back in the old days there was no difference between women and men in fighting and hunting.

The Shirin is born, and raised for a few years by a friendly tiger.

Her first heroic act is beating up a bunch of boys who throw fruit at girls who rejected their advances.

Finished one reading challenge, starting another 😊 The goal is to read 26 traditional epics with women protagonists for next year's A to Z. I can't wait to delve into all these amazing, little know stories!

First up: The story of Shirin Mama, from the Xibo people (Northeast China). An epic about a girl who rescues children from bandits, and becomes a goddess in the end.

The cover of the book (Hungarian edition). Titled The Western Campaign of Shirin Mama, or, the miraculous story of the birth of a goddess

I finally figured out where the UK keeps the folklore books. I wandered into a witchy shop, and there they were. 😄

The Welsh storytellers had a surprise for us at last night's gala dinner at the end of the storytelling conference 😄 Some were more baffled than others.

A Mari Lwyd (a horse skull decorated with flowers and ribbons, carried as a puppet by a person covered with a cloak) walked by one of the event organizers on a leash with bells through the dining room, to the great surprise of attending guests.

Morning keynotes at the FEST storytelling conference.
Sentence from Steve Byrne that hit home:

"Cultural heritage is not just what we *used to* have."

We (the NGO I work for) put a survey on FB about adults who read folktales / fairy tales.

It's getting a bunch of trolls.
How is THIS a post getting the trolls?!

"Adults should read literature, not infantile gibberish."

"Tales for adults are called fantasy fiction. Or the news."

"Doesn't this organization do anything else but stories?"

What. The. Hell.

I heard someone complaining "Why did they have to put pixel art on the Museum of Ethnography?!"

Reader, they are traditional cross stitch patterns.

I find it kinda hilarious that in some folk traditions swearing was used to ward off evil spirits.

Me: *swearing elaborately and profusely*

Demon: *clutches pearls* "Well, I never...!"

Swearing saves souls people 😄

Today's find at the Book Week fair in Budapest: catalog of Moldavian Csángó legend motifs. Including historical and belief legends. Gonna be very useful for storytelling research 😊

Two volumes next to each other. One is open, revealing a page of the motif index with notes and sources. The other is closed, it was a colorful red and orange cover. Title reads (in Hungarian) Moldavian Csángó lehend catalogue, by Magyar Zoltán.

You know the dilemma folktale type where four men create a woman? Carpenter carves her, tailor dresses her, jeweler makes her jewelry, scholar brings her to life. And then they fight about who gets to marry her.

Well I just found a Tamil version where the woman dumps all four of them, saying they should care about her own qualities, and not bicker about who did what for her.

And then she goes to the king and requests a proper husband.

Win.

I was telling a folktale about a prince who likes to wear red leather boots (and in the end he is identified by them, Cinderella style). And the entire time I couldn't help but picture Kinky Boots... 😂 😅

Revisiting Franz Xaver von Schönwerth's Bavarian folktale collection (contemporaneous with the Grimms). It has a number of tales where fairies or elves help girls who have gotten pregnant out of wedlock.

Sometimes folklore is surprisingly kind.

I am searching for folktales for a summer camp where kids can learn about various professions. Including movie stunts.

Does Siegfried count as a stunt man when he takes his friend's place in the duel with Brünhilde? 😆

The Hungarian online used book store I visit has a book of Ukraininan folktales in Kannada translation.
That's... random. 😄

I managed to complete this yeat's A to Z Challenge, mostly because I scheduled the posts ahead of time.

I also decided to announce my theme for NEXT year... mostly because it will take a whole lot of reading to pull it off :)

For #EarthDay, I am sharing an older blog post:
Folktales about Climate Change

I collected some traditional stories about taking care of our natural home, and what happens when we don't.

#FolktaleMoment of the day:

Reading a legend about how emperor Franz Joseph's wife was a witch who used to turn him into a horse and ride him every night.

As a reminder that traditional storytellers often used everyday spoken language, here is what the wise advisor says when the Emperor confides in him about the matter:

"F*** hell, Joe..."

:D
