Throughout the photo there are sporophytes, one in sharp focus near center top frame. In this species, the sporophytes consist of long stalks that curve at the top with a spore-containing capsule dangling down from each.

Seeing some #AltText discussion happening in my timeline, which is cool!

My contribution is to repeat the advice I once got when I asked "How do I know what to describe in a picture? I don't want to overwhelm with unnecessary detail but also not miss important info."

The answer was beautiful and simple:

Imagine you're telling a dear friend on the phone what you are seeing.

That's it.
What's important is what you would want your friend to know about the picture.

It is not an issue of awareness at this point, but clearly power games at play. Evidently I am the first to face it with such brutal honesty.”

There are so many great posts that I want to boost but don't because of images with no alt text.

It takes a little extra time but can make a world of difference to someone else.

Alt text is an accessibility issue. Imagine if some posts on your feed were just nothing, an absence, and from replies you know that others can see something that maybe you figure out from context.

Including alt text helps include everyone.

Mastodon has introduced me to the joy of reading descriptive #alttext. I take in the image then read the text as icing on the cake. It can really add extra personality to images.

The other day I wrote an in-depth article explaining how to create an accessible, expandable (bare bones) navigation with a fallback, in case #JavaScript isn't working.

Today I explained why you shouldn't put a giant table inside an image without #AltText for a #blog because it's "quick & easy", but rather invest time building a custom component to solve this. It has been decided to do it "quick & easy" 🫠
