Something I have been meaning to ask the #fediverse at large but since you brought it up I will ask you: What is the difference between having an account on a #PixelFed instance vs. just uploading photos to any other ActivityPub compatible instance? Especially if I use a generic AP client on my phone like #FediLab?

Entweder ist #Pixelfed momentan so langsam aufgrund von vielen #Neuanmeldungen, denn es kommt eine #Fehlermeldung nach der anderen oder Pixelfed kommt mit #OpenSource Browser die auf Datensicherheit bedacht sind wie #Mull nicht klar. Nur so werde ich momentan nicht warm mit Pixelfed.

Doesn’t look like you can follow an account on #Pixelfed from mastodon and receive updates. At least, it isn’t working for me. 😭😫😖

Also: Don't ask me to choose between instances if you don't tell me what each of them are and how they're different. (Ahem, #Pixelfed -- which gave me NO clues about the different instances when I signed up last night. My only option was to pick one of the icons, and sign in there. So I chose the largest one, and assumed I could migrate later on-- Yes, this old techno-phobe has learned how to do that, too, with time! LOL)

Even when googling, I could find no list to say anything about the instances. When signing up for Mastodon, there was a list showing what each instance specialized in or most appealed to. Did I like humor? Science? Music? Did I want to focus on politics? I could see which Mastodon/Fediverse server to sign up with for that.

But not so for Pixelfed. That needs to be addressed.

Maybe @FediTips or someone at @pixelfed could make a linked list of them, with some description abt what their focuses are? That would be nice.

#Pixelfed is getting talked about on TikTok as an alternative to #Instagram.

Almost every video about it has people in the comments saying "Why do I have to pick a server? What does that mean?"

Either people are just dumb beyond help, or we need to do better at onboarding people to the #fediverse.

Erfreulich, dass immer mehr Institutionen wie Hochschulen, Behörden und Kultureinrichtungen sowie Vereine & NGOs #Facebook #Meta verlassen* ! :rocket:

...noch erfreulicher wäre, wenn sich von diesen Institutionen einige auch engagieren würden, eigene Instanzen ins Fediverse zu bringen.



Auch für diejenigen, die keinen Twitterklon suchen, bietet das #Fediverse ja einige Alternativen. Allerdings ist hier das Angebot an offenen Instanzen momentan doch sehr begrenzt. Gerade seit im letzten Jahr fast ausschließlich neue Mastodon-Instanzen eröffnet wurden.
Aber: Es gibt inzwischen auch einige bewährte #ManagedHosting -Angebote, d.h. "Hoster, die einem die Installation und die technische Betreuung abnehmen", die auch teilweise Angebote für #Friendica #Hubzilla #Sharkey #Pixelfed u.a. anbieten: Eine Fediverse Instanz hosten lassen (eine Anbieter Liste) (Überblick von @roblen@microblog.at).

Eine eigene Friendica-Instanz wäre damit bspw. bereits ab 4€/Monat (für kleine Gruppen; oder 13€/Monat für große Instanzen) zu betreiben, ohne dass man sich selbst um die technische Seite wie Installation, Betrieb, Updates und Backups kümmern muss.

#LeaveMeta: *Gründe dafür gibt es genug... übrigens nicht erst seit neuestem, sondern seit vielen Jahren (siehe z.B. Das Ende eines Facebook-Accounts in der @taz @taz @taz (inoffiziell) von 2017.

I've got a Pixelfed instance up and running, but it's not properly fetching info / activities from other servers. I can search for users, see profiles and follow them, but it looks as if their following / follows are 0 and that they have never posted. Plus my own follow count remains at 0 and my timeline empty.

The Diagnostics troubleshooting gives a ✅ for everything, and there are no errors in the logs. Any ideas how to further troubleshoot?

I think it's a great thing that Pixelfed is getting adopted by a lot of people who are not Mastodon users.
Among other reasons because people will finally start to understand what the Fediverse is and that it's not synonymous with Mastodon.

I just did it! Well... I started it... I shared a snap of my Pixelfed profile on IG and I wrote a long post about being sad about metas choices and I'll be closing my account at the end of the month.
I will miss following certain friends! I will miss seeing the posts of the Sheldrick orphaned elephants, of all the lovely dogs...
But I just can't stick around there... 😔 I can't support that...

I have asked friends to each out in other ways. I'm afraid many won't. They probably won't even see the post... And that's a shame. But I guess that's just the way it is...

I wish I could ditch WhatsApp too, but many companies don't offer email anymore. It's either calling or WhatsApp. So I'll have to stick to that. But I do have Signal and Matrix. Doing my best to steer away from the greedy nazi's...

Ah well... Let's see what will happen!

I certainly don’t claim to know exactly how the #Fediverse works, and I know that #Mastodon and Pixelfed (among others) can federate together. I’m still in the dark, really, about how it all works. But I’m there.
