*Me, burying myself in a pile of TBR books I deliberately put off till 2024*

Hey all! Happy new year! Whatcha reading? 😊 Any reading goals, wishes, hopes or resolutions?

Christmas book: Patrick Bringley's All the Beauty in the World, about the Metropolitan Museum.

Apparently in the back corridors there are signs that say "Yield to Art in Transit"

I want that on a t-shirt so bad

I am compiling lists for next year's #nonfiction and #poetry reads. This is my happy place. Making TBR lists.

Finally giving the Dionysiaca an actual read.

Despite how much the translator's introduction trashes it as a hack job, I am really enjoying it so far (some Classical philologists need to chill).

It opens with the fight against Typhon, which is a pretty epic boss fight, even by mythological standards.

Hello fellow toots! I'm re-pimping this quote from our fellow tooter, Kit (@Kit ), who gave Alpha Max five stars!

"I really enjoyed this fun romp through alternate universes, following alternate Max Tundras (what a perfect character name too). Reminded me of Vonnegut, smart, wryly funny, and makes you think. I’m glad I picked this up!"

Wrote a blog post for Myths and Legends Day on the A to Z main blog. It's about how to find good books on legends and mythology 😊 And what to look for in a good source.

You walk into any used book store in Hungary, there will be a Folklore/Ethnography section. Every time I travel abroad I check bookshops to see if they have one. I am realizing that Hungarians are spoiled in this regard 😄

At the Budapest International Book Fair, where you can get a free haircut for reading out loud. 😄

Photo from the book fair building. There is a colorful carpet on the floor, with books scattered on it. A girl sits on a small chair, reading from a yellow book, while a man kneels behind her, cutting her hair. There are people sitting and standing around, listening.

There was a poll that stated—Rowling’s opening line in the HP series is one of best in the world. Someone posted about how there are a bunch of other opening statements that are better.

Here’s one of my personal favorites, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez (in English):
“It is inevitable — the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.”

What are some of your favorite opening lines in literature? 😊

A bunch of cool things are dropping tomorrow:

Folk Tales of the Cosmos by storyteller Janet Dowling

A Kickstarter campaign for a tarot-based #ttrpg from the creators of the Sefirot deck

#GenV (The Boys spinoff)

There's probably more but I'm excited for these

📚 #LibGen: publishers sue infamous 'shadow library' over pirated #books

"What's noticeable is the popularity of the site, as many social media users openly talk about their usage of the illegal sharing network."

Had a brand new #anxiety dream last night: I was in a huge, famous used book store, and I had to leave in 10 minutes to catch an important train... 😶

Toddler melted down because we had to leave the book shop, and honestly, this was the first tantrum I could relate to.

The cover of my new book that's coming out in a few weeks 😊 Art by Viktória Hitka.

Seven-legged horses and kind witches: Magical folktales from Csík

It's a selection of folktales from Csíkszentdomokos, Transylvania, from a collection done in the 1940s. It was an awesome set of tales to work with.

Colorful book cover, with the title written in yellow at the bottom. The illustration on the cover features a golden-haired girl, with the sun on her forehead. She is riding a pale blue, seven-legged horse who has a mane reminiscent of a cloud, and the crescent moon on its neck. The background is green, depicting a forest of pine trees.

Water Outlaws by @slhuang is out today. Two chapters in, already hooked. I needed his genderbent wuxia Water Margin in my life.

The textile factory girls of early 19th century #Massachusetts made a phenomenon of themselves during their own time by functionally converting the town of Lowell into a sprawling college campus for the working class.

Anyone who feels trapped in a brain-dead job ought to check out these factory workers.

Some articles about them are here: https://earlywithdrawal.net/victoriana/index.php/articles

This book really sounds awesome, and I would love it if the project got funded.

Hugh Lupton is a stellar storyteller, and he is generously sharing the best of his folktale repertoire.

All in all, I love this reading challenge, and I did not regret picking up any of these books. I loved the topics and the places they took me. 📚

You can do your own version of this challenge if you like nonfiction :) Have fun!

The humid air of the cape, which had overly embraced us to-day, began off the coast to consider greater ambitions. It would seek us out to-night for wet kisses and sudden discharges of electric energy. I feared for Ophelie in her barn loft, but reminded myself that the barn animals have always been safe there, and she would be as well.

I'm reading a book about the Montreal Women's Symphony Orchestra that was founded in 1940 (because women were generally not considered fit to be performing musicians in orchestras at the time). It is inspiring and fascinating, and goes on my "how is this not a prestige TV show yet?" list.
