#Introduction 🌍

Hi everyone! FINALLY, I’m happy to join Mastodon!

I’m a #Postdoc at the University of Helsinki, working on #UrbanPlanning, #Transportation, #HumanMobility, and #AI.

Excited to connect, explore your work, and share mine!

Let’s talk #Science, #BigData, #SmartCities, #Sustainability, and more.

#Question

Roll bars have been used in race cars since the 1950s saving 99% of the lives that would have otherwise been lost in accidents involving astronomical speeds and ferocity.

Why weren't they used in passenger vehicles, instead there are half belts, slow inflating bags, and gadgetry of relative inferiority?

Cost of mass-production?
Convenience?
Aesthetics?

Ballot initiatives on transit won big this November, with measures passing in 19 communities across the country!

This brings the total amount of funding raised by transit initiatives in 2024 to $25 billion. These wins not only reflect ubiquitous support for better public transit, but are important steps toward decarbonizing the transportation sector, meeting U.S. climate goals, and shaping thriving communities. #transport #transportation #election #election2024 https://www.supplychainbrain.com/articles/40686-subways-buses-and-bike-lanes-scored-billions-in-local-ballot-wins

Breakaway car infrastructure
In the middle of the sidewalk
🤦

How, exactly, does the #trafficEngineers' thought process work here? What kind of world would it be if #transportation infrastructure stopped cars *before* they got on the sidewalk? Are we more afraid about hurting drivers inside their armored and padded box than they are of killing someone with their car?

This is not a freeway. There should be no "clear zone". Any driver wrecking at freeway speeds here deserves to die in a fire.
looking left, a breakaway sign post with flashing lights, smack in the middle of a sidewalk while the street has way more clear width than necessary for 20mph speeds
looking right, the sign "push button to turn on warnings lights" is in the foreground and a broken-off warning lights pole laying on the sidewalk behind it.

Bigger vehicles can be safer in crashes, but far more dangerous for pedestrians.

And the average size of cars and trucks in the U.S. continues to grow. Some current models – like that of the Toyota Rav4 – are a third larger than they were only 15 years ago.

That’s led to a 77% increase in pedestrian fatalities since 2010.

Graphic with two cars speeding through crosswalk. The text reads: "Larger, heavier and deadlier. Cars are getting bigger on US roads, and that's increasing pedestrian and cyclist deaths. Here's how communities can fight back."

“Fun fact: #SimCity was forced to pretend that all parking lots were underground because the game would be really boring if it was proportional in terms of parking lots.”

Boring like too many real places ruined by too much parking?
