On this day in 1955, the civil rights activist Rosa Parks rejected a bus driver's order to vacate a seat for a white female passenger after the "white" section of the bus was filled.

“Today marks 77 years since the #UN adopted Resolution 181 on Nov 29, 1947, proposing the partition of #Palestine. While framed as a solution to European antisemitism, it laid the groundwork for the ethnic cleansing and ongoing #genocide of Palestinians and dispossession.
The UN plan divided Palestine into two states:
• A Jewish state (55% of the land), despite Jews making up only ~30% of the population and owning ~6% of the land.
• An Arab state (45%).
• Jerusalem as an internationally governed city.
The plan ignored the will of the indigenous majority, the Palestinians.
The plan came with conditions:
• Economic union between the two states.

"#Historian #LawrenceBritt studied the fascist regimes of #Hitler (Germany), #Mussolini (Italy), #Franco (Spain), #Suharto (Indonesia), and #Pinochet (Chile) and found they had 14 elements in common. He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism.
1. Powerful and Continuing #Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of #patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. #Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of #HumanRights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, and long incarcerations of prisoners.
3. Identification of #Enemies / #Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: #racial, #ethnic or #religious #minorities; #liberals; #communists; #socialists, #terrorists…
4. Supremacy of the #Military
Even when there are widespread #domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5. Rampant #Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional #gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to #abortion is high, as is #homophobia and anti-#gay legislation.
6. Controlled #MassMedia
Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation or by sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Government #censorship and #secrecy especially in war time, are very common.
7. Obsession with #NationalSecurity
Fear of hostile foreign powers is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8. #Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions.
9. Protection of #Corporate Power
The #industrial and business #aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Suppression of #Labor Power
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor #unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11. Disdain for #Intellectuals and the #Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to #HigherEducation and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other #academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.
12. Obsession with #Crime and #Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the #police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego #CivilLiberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant #Cronyism and #Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. #FraudulentElections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by #SmearCampaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control #voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

The foundation of any successful society is an effective healthcare system based around a simple objective — to provide the best service at the *lowest* possible cost and to guarantee access to every member of society. This objective ensures that healthcare provides the greatest good for the greatest number.
The American healthcare system is set up to provide the best healthcare at the *highest* possible cost — because this is what enables individuals to extract the most amount of wealth from the industry. And whether it serves the needs of everyone is irrelevant.
That’s why it’s so inefficient. A large chunk of the $4.2 trillion spent on healthcare in the US isn’t spent on healthcare. It’s spent on an industry that has been created to profit from people’s health.
As the graph shows, among high-income nations, the US is an anomaly in that it has the highest spending and the lowest life expectancy.
Healthcare in America is designed as a mechanism for creating wealth, not for creating a system that provides the best possible healthcare.

It’s with sadness that we note the passing of Thomas Eugene Kurtz, on November 12th. He was co-inventor of the BASIC programming language back in the 1960s. The legacy of his work lives on in the generation of technologists.

There is no sign of the transition away from burning fossil fuels that was pledged by the world’s nations a year ago, with 2024 on track to set another new record for global carbon emissions.
The new data comes from the Global Carbon Budget project, a collaboration of more than 100 experts led by Prof Pierre Friedlingstein, at the University of Exeter, UK, who said: “The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly dramatic, yet we still see no sign that burning of fossil fuels has peaked. Time is running out and world leaders meeting at Cop29 must bring about rapid and deep cuts to fossil fuel emissions.”

If the Democratic Party *actually* stood for the rights of women and minorities, for support of unions and working people, for quality public education and public healthcare, for a healthy climate and for the safety of our biosphere – If they actually stood up for all these things instead of just *pretending* to do so, then the Republican Party would have no chance of achieving electoral majority in the United States.
But that’s not who the Democratic Party is. It’s not who they have been for at least 40 years. Rather, they are a party standing up for the military-industrial complex, for the police state, for neoliberalism, for capitalism, and for corporate ascendancy.
This election was NOT a victory for the Republican Party. It was instead a total failure of leadership by the Democratic Party, and a well-earned defeat.
Four years from now, if there is another election, we should expect nothing different from them.
We need system change.

The American dream has become an American nightmare.

America has always been a violent, racist country. Little wonder, being built on slavery and genocide, spawn of the brutal British Empire.
Our war for independence was no romantic story about a fight for freedom and justice. It was a revolt against a king not playing nice with his colonists. Some were fleeing religious persecution, but many were here to get rich. They had no compunction about murdering the indigenous people who saved them from starving in their first winter on these shores.
Native Americans were slaughtered, the survivors driven across the land to reservations, their resources stolen. Texas was annexed in 1845 from the brown people of Mexico under the newly invented guise of “Manifest Destiny” which argued we have moral virtue, and a divine right to that destiny.
Through this time and well before, Africans were packed into the holds of dank, leaking ships for weeks-long voyages across the Atlantic Ocean. The fifty percent that survived disease outbreaks from these barbaric conditions were sold as if animals. Eventually, slavery ripped families apart in the Civil War. The emancipation of blacks led to the Jim Crow laws in the south not overturned until 1965.
To understand what happened on November 5, we must consider history.
