#Karstmas day 22

I love cave pearls, they are one of my favourite formations. So when we found a bunch in a new cave we discovered, dug open, explored, and surveyed, I was quite excited!

Similar in a way to the pearls you may think of, they form often around a bit of sand or a teeny tiny rock, when the water hits it and precipitates out some calcite. They develop extremely slowly, and are a relatively rare formation due to the precise situations they require in order to form.

A photo of shallow small pool of water held in by rimstone. Everything is shiny and pure looking. In the water are round objects of varying sphere like shapes, ranging in color from pure white to slightly gray to slightly tan, but all are very light and bright and clean. They are in clusters, and there are over 50 in this image.

Campaigners present ‘#VisionOfHope’ for #Scotland to become #rewilding nation - #ScottishRewildingAlliance said the country can ‘lead the movement for global change’.

"We also need to support #nature to help address the #ClimateCrisis and to create a climate resilient Scotland. We know we must protect and restore the natural environment for future generations."

Nick Forbes
Wednesday 04 December 2024

"A campaign group calling for Scotland to be declared the world’s first '#RewildingNation' has presented the Scottish Government with proposals for rewilding 30% of the country’s land and seas.

"The Scottish Rewilding Alliance, a coalition of more than 20 conservation and nature-focused organisations, presented what it called its 'vision of hope' to Scotland’s climate action minister, Alasdair Allan, during a reception in Edinburgh.

"The alliance said rewilding 30% of Scotland can be achieved if ministers 'show leadership' and commit to 'meaningful action' to restore habitats including #peatlands, native #woodlands, #wetlands, #rivers and #seas.

"It said this can be achieved while maintaining and benefiting productive #farmland.

"Doing so, they said, would help tackle the connected nature and climate emergencies, and create benefits for people and local communities around health, jobs, sustainable food production, re-peopling, clean air and water, and healthy rivers and seas."

"Advocates for #wolf protection are still fighting to restore the species, but as the wolf expands its territory, resistance to such efforts — or to any restoration of protections — is growing more widespread and more fierce."

Bird Flu jumps from Birds to Human in Louisiana [Patient hospitalized].

It is the first human H5N1 case detected in Louisiana. For now, the case is considered a "presumptive" positive until testing is confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health officials says “caution people to stay away from any sick or dead birds”.

A person in Louisiana is hospitalized with H5N1 bird flu after having contact with sick and dying birds suspected of carrying the virus.

Although the person has been hospitalized, their condition was not immediately reported. It's also unclear what kind of birds the person had contact with [wild, backyard or commercial birds]. Ars has reached out to Louisiana's health department and will update this piece with any additional information.

To date, at least 845 herds across 16 states have contracted the virus since March, including 630 in California, which detected its first dairy infections in late August.

At least 60 people in the US have been infected amid the viral spread this year. But the new case in Louisiana stands out. To date, nearly all of the human cases have been among poultry and dairy workers [unlike the new case in Louisiana] and almost all have been mild [also unlike the new case]. Most of the cases have involved conjunctivitis [pink eye] and/or mild respiratory and flu-like symptoms.

Dead #trees are not wasted timber dollars - they are sources of food for literally thousands of beings in a #forest #ecosystem, from tiny microscopic beings to insectivorous birds. Standing dead trees are known as snags, while a fallen dead trees are nurse logs. A cut or natural stump can serve the same #ecological function as a #NurseStump.

Nature wastes nothing. If there is a nutrient source to be had, there is a being to benefit from it. Nurse logs, standing snags & nurse stumps play hosts to all sorts of mosses, lichens, fungi, insects & arthropods, many hidden deep inside, as well as other living beings that prey on them.

Nurse #stumps are still deeply rooted; new plant, tree & fungi life grows out of their tops. Nurse stumps & dead stumps that have no new growth atop are like anchor systems for living trees growing in forests. You destabilize the ecosystem when you remove them from their natural #environment.

« When man works to restore order, he associates himself with the author of order; he is favoured by nature, that is to say, by the ensemble of secondary forces that are the agents of the Divinity. His action partakes of the divine; it becomes both gentle and imperious, forcing nothing yet not resisted by anything. His arrangements restore health. »

A single Mutation could bring Bird Flu a critical Step closer to a New Pandemic.

With the H5N1 bird flu virus spreading quickly across animals in the US, experts are on high alert for signs of human-to-human transmission. Such a jump could become far easier with just a single mutation, according to new research.

The virus has a fatality rate of 50 percent in humans, so animal infections need to be carefully monitored and tightly controlled to stop the spreading strain of H5N1 adapting into something that one person can give directly to another.

"Our experiments revealed that the Q226L mutation could significantly increase the virus ability to target and attach to human-type receptors," says biochemist James Paulson. "This mutation gives the virus a foothold on human cells that it didn't have before, which is why this finding is a red flag for possible adaptation to people."

While several of these morphing mutations are usually needed to put humans in danger from avian influenza, this time the transformation process could be quicker, scientists from the Scripps Research Institute in California found.

"The findings demonstrate how easily this virus could evolve to recognize human-type receptors," says infectious disease scientist Ting-Hui Lin, first author of the new study.

The researchers also investigated the H5N1 2.3.4.4b strain of the virus found in recent human infections, finding that a single amino acid mutation in a key protein would be enough to switch the virus target from avian-type receptors to human-type receptors.
