While waiting for the ferry, I spotted this gull eating a starfish, looked like chocking at first…

NEW: In Indonesia, two islands have already disappeared and thousands more are at the mercy of the oceans as global sea levels rise and threaten coastlines.

But even Java, one of the largest islands in the country, can’t escape this fate. Now, millions are at risk.

This is the second story in our two-part photojournalism series “Parched and Drenched” on the water crisis in Indonesia by Garry Lotulung.

I don't know what they saw, but based on their hair it was SHOCKING one way or another

#sillyScribbles #photography #nonsense
A photo of a damp, small, fluffy white feather standing upright in a mess of grass. Most of the grass, both foreground and background, is blurred. The white feather is still fluffy on the bottom half, and there are small drops of water on the fluff. The top is flat and damper, and it is sticking up in points, like a punky hairdo. It has upturned armed and a shocked expression drawn on.

Spiritual Solace

https://justin-farrimond.pixels.com/featured/spiritual-solace-justin-farrimond.html

When this hectic and often cruel world of ours gets too much you need to take yourself away. This is St Oran's Chapel on the Isle of Iona, Scotland. I took this shot here in the cemetery looking north on a breezy summer's day. Here, on the island, you feel adrift but protected from all that 21st century life assails you with. True spiritual solace.

I was walking through a relatively new area of town and came across this scene. I walked by at first, but I had to come back and take a picture. I think what struck me the most was the empty pizza box in the lit case.

This used to be a cupcake shop. I don't know how long it's been empty. It may not be abandoned, per se, but I thought @AbandonedAmerica might appreciate it anyway.

An empty storefront. The lights are still on, but there are cables hanging and empty cabinets. A lit display case holds an empty pizza box.

I came face to face with a whole room full of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder whilst I was in Vienna recently. I can stand and look at his paintings for ages - absorbing all the fascinating detail.
This one is The Tower of Babel, painted in around 1563. There is a very similar painting in Rotterdam, but this one is much the bigger of the two.

#GutenMorgen Trötenland. ☕

How good could a dive be where I have a total drysuit flood? Very very good is the answer! We had an awesome encounter with a common octopus in Rhode Island! I took a million pictures, but here's one to get you started 😀 🐙

Good morning to you all from a grey and slightly chilly Tokyo. Chilly compared to yesterday, when temps here hit 23C.

Photos from yesterday, all shot with the 65x24 app. Ever since 1998 and the release of the Hasselblad XPan, I've been in love with the 65x24 aspect ratio. Link to app in comments.

Full descriptions in ALT text.

Have a great day, all.

A 65x24 horizontal aspect ratio photo made with the 65x24 app on an iPhone 12Pro.

We are in Shimbashi, a gritty neighbourhood of Tokyo full of bars, restaurants and a fave for workers to visit once their day is done.

The focus of this photo is a reflection of the Shimbashi New Building in the mirror on a scooter. The building has a distinctive facade and is a signature of the area near the station.

This scene shows the Shimbashi Ekimae (Station front) Buildings, Nos. 1 &2. Built in 1966 and designed by Takeo Sato, these buildings are a signature of the east side of Shimbashi Station.

I was in one of the narrow streets of restaurants and bars, looking towards the skyscrapers of the neighbouring Shiodome district. One large, distinctive tall building is in the middle of the background. Large metal struts dominate the outside of the building. This is the Nittele Tower building (Nippon Television Tower). 32 storeys high, Nittele was designed by the Richard Rodgers Consortium.

In the foreground the word "To-ma-re" (Stop in Japanese) is painted on the road. A train of the Yamanote Line crosses the bridge in the middle-ground of the photo.

In this photo, my focus was the extractor piping on the building at left. Loved its shape and the way it was catching the sun. Late afeternoon sun picks out features of the side of a row of buildings, with the a/c and other services visible. We also see a little of the street continuing east, on the left of the frame.

I found this nudibranch (Aeolidia papillosa) on a dive at the UNH Research Pier in New Castle, New Hampshire. They prey on various Cnidaria species like pink hydroids and frilled nudibranches. They are tricky to photograph as they blend into their surroundings, but the snoot really helped to separate this one from its surroundings.

Common Buckeye #butterflies on Gregg’s Mistflower in the front garden. Since it appears that the seasons-change in SE Texas has been cancelled, with daily temps more summer-like than anything approximating autumn, I went ahead and bought some end-of-season-on-sale native perennial butterfly attractor plants and got them in the ground. Success so far, these are the first buckeyes I’ve seen in our garden.

7 free open-source tools for amazing photo and video edits

A desktop monotor showing the GIMP application open for photo editing. Various icons are situated around the central edit area. In the editing area is shown a photo of a living room with a smal;l table on the left, in the centre a chair which is facing the left rear corner of the room. Against the far wall is a table with what looks like a large screen TV on top of it.
While there is no shortage of powerful photo and video editing tools, most of them come with a hefty price tag or require a subscription to get started. It may discourage students, beginners, and freelancers from exploring them fully. Luckily, thanks to free, open-source tools, you don’t need to shell out hundreds of dollars to achieve stunning results.

XDA Developers have short-listed their choices in the linked article below, and explained why each has been chosen.

I’d certainly also add digiKam for photo editing. It has some very powerful features, including advanced geolocation editing, batch editing, blending of stacked images, OCR text generation, creation of calendars, creation of panoramas, RAW editing, camera control, and exporting to numerous cloud services including Flickr, Imgur, Piwigo, Pinterest, etc.

MiniMercado

A little light dreamscaping over this photo of a mini market on a Spanish street corner.
Here and now, in the real world, it's a grey day outside my window, but I can see the sunlight dappled on this building and still remember the golden warmth.
