Highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, has increasingly spread to mammals and infected hundreds of people, raising concerns that it may lead to human-to-human transmission and turn into a new pandemic.
Cases of the disease in mammals have mostly been detected in the Americas and Europe.

Outdoor cats with #BirdFlu in #NewJersey. No known exposure.
New Jersey reports H5 avian flu cluster in cats
February 28, 2025
"'The New Jersey Department of Health (#NJDH) today announced that H5 avian flu has been confirmed in a feral cat from Hunterdon County that had severe disease, including neurologic symptoms, and was humanely euthanized. The detection was confirmed by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
"Other cats at the same property were sick, and a second H5 infection was found in an #IndoorOutdoor cat. Tests are pending on results from other cats, and an investigation is ongoing. Officials said the cats had no known exposure to infected poultry, livestock, raw milk, or raw meat, but roamed freely outdoors, where they may have had exposure to wild birds or other animals.
"The NJDH and its local partners are monitoring people who were exposed to the cats, and all are currently without symptoms.
"New Jersey Health Commissioner Kaitlan Baston, MD, said, 'While the risk of H5 infection to the general population remains low at this time, it is important for people to learn more about the situation and take steps to avoid potential infection through exposure to animals, including feral cats.'"

"With all the recent stories about the outbreaks of #AvianFlu among #cats, we are often asked about how prone our dogs are to this new variant.
"It is not impossible for a dog to catch bird flu, but it is extremely unlikely. The dog flu that was first identified in Chicago in the US is caused by the #H3N2 variant, but the avian flu that has caused the cases in cats after eating raw food or drinking raw milk is caused by a different variant, #H5N1.
"The only H5N1 cases that have been identified in dogs involved direct contact. One was in #Thailand and was probably spread to the dog after eating an infected #duck, and the other was in Canada, where the dog only got sick after eating an infected wild #goose. No cases have been reported after eating raw dog food.
"The other causes of flu in dogs are much more common than the H5N1 variant, and a vaccine for those types has already been developed. Canine flu (#CIV) is caused by H3N8 or H3N2, unlike the H5N1 strain that is making eggs so expensive."

Dozens of dead geese found in #NewJersey town’s parks test positive for #BirdFlu, officials say
Updated: Feb. 25, 2025
By Eric Conklin | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
"Dozens of dead geese found in parts of a New Jersey borough’s parks have tested positive for the avian flu, leading local officials to keep the properties closed and ask that a popular event be moved.
"Allentown Borough officials posted a notice to their website on Thursday that Dr. Farmer’s Park, Pete Sensi Park and a portion of Heritage Park will remain closed after some 30 dead geese were removed earlier this month.
"Local officials were informed Thursday by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection that the birds removed by a contractor tested positive for #H5N1 the virus that causes the illness, said Borough Administrator Laurie Roth. The decease was suspected in the deaths earlier this month.
"The virus was suspected in the deaths in Allentown, as well as several other municipalities in Monmouth County, where dead geese have appeared over the past weeks.
"The parks will remain closed indefinitely, Roth said."

Excerpt:
"Remember that #AvianInfluenza spreads via feces, saliva and mucus, which is why it spreads faster among birds in very close quarters (especially poultry in this country, hence the need for flock owners to take protective measures). #Ducks and #geese make up most of the cases in wild birds, but we are also seeing it show up in some of the predators or species that feed on the carcasses of sick birds, like #hawks, #eagles, #crows and #vultures. What we consider the 'backyard birds,' like #chickadees and #woodpeckers, are very unlikely to contract avian influenza, so there is no need to stop feeding those birds or take down bird feeders. You should always keep your feeders clean, but this is a good time to be extra vigilant with regular cleanings and also protect yourself from exposure. Avoid contact with a sick or dead wild bird. If you do have a report of a sick or dead wild bird, call Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife at 207-287-8000 or 800-452-4664, or report it online. (More info: mefishwildlife.com)
"Think about the things you can do to help birds around your yard, be it during an avian influenza outbreak or not. Keeping your cats indoors is the best thing you can do, then treat your windows to break up reflections and reduce strikes. Support the next generation of birds with native plants: bird seed helps us see wild birds, while #NativePlants sustain them."

"veterinarians were conducting research on a highly secure chicken research farm—the birds there were not allowed out of their cages or barns. The water came from a secure well and was filtered to remove pathogens. The barns have large fans that create a one-way airflow, and the entire facility is surrounded by a highly secure fence.
Also, no employees came into contact with any other birds when not on duty. Still, the farm experienced an infection. The veterinarians suggest the only possibility left is that the virus was carried aloft by the wind and wafted into the barn, settling on the captive birds."

Possible evidence of windborne H5N1 viral infections in chickens
A team of government veterinarians with the State Veterinary Institute Prague in the Czech Republic has found possible evidence of windborne H5N1 infections in chickens.Bob Yirka (Phys.org)
"some reports have proposed that windborne spread plays a significant role in IAV [Influenza A Virus] transmission over longer distances under suitable weather conditions.
➡️ In studies of the severe H7N7 HPAI [Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza] outbreak in the Netherlands in 2003, one study claimed that wind spread accounted for 18% and another 24% of transmission events up to 25 km.
➡️ Similarly, during the 2007 equine H3N8 influenza outbreak in Australia, 81% of infections within a cluster of 437 horse farms were attributed to windborne spread over a distance of 1-2 km.
➡️ Around the same time, the serological screening of turkeys in Minnesota in 2007-08 revealed that turkey premises within a 1.9 km radius of swine farms were most likely to test seropositive for H3N2 and H1N1 IAVs, thereby suggesting windborne transmission.
➡️ And during the 2014-15 multistate H5N2 HPAI outbreak in the USA, it was estimated that up to 39% of farms in Iowa alone could have experienced windborne infection within a radius of 8.5 km"

"A second confirmed case of #ElonMusk’s DOGE team accidentally firing critical government workers is leaving egg on the president’s face.
"NBC’s report revealing that officials at the Department of Agriculture (#USDA) working on the federal efforts to halt the spread of bird flu at poultry and dairy farms comes at a poor time for the administration. #EggPrices are skyrocketing as the culling of millions of chickens — implemented by the USDA to halt the disease in farms where it is discovered — has caused shortages.
"The agency expects prices to jump another 20 percent this year.
"But a spokesperson for the USDA on Tuesday was forced to admit to reporters that Elon Musk’s DOGE initiative has already hindered the agency’s efforts. 'Several' employees critical to the agency’s bird flu response efforts were laid off by order of DOGE staffers, according to the USDA, only for the layoffs to be rescinded after the necessity of the axed positions was explained to Musk’s team."

This is what happens when you move fast and break things.
The CDC is gagged. The FDA is too. Egg prices have skyrocketed because the U.S. aren’t bothering to try and contain H5N1.
Pandemic prevention or preparedness is not a priority to this administration, and it’s going to cost lives.
Remember that a well fitted respirator and eye protection can help prevent bird flu. It’s time to mask up.

"#Veterinarians and laboratory diagnosticians are fielding reports of death losses in cat populations linked to avian influenza infections.
"Beginning in 2022, an #H5N1 subtype of highly pathogenic avian influenza (abbreviated as HPAI) virus caused death losses in domestic turkeys and chickens in South Dakota and elsewhere in the United States, an outbreak that continues. The HPAI virus causes respiratory and multiple organ failure in affected birds, typically appearing as increased numbers of dead birds in large commercial operations, as well as smaller backyard flocks. Deaths in wild birds, typically migrating waterfowl but also other bird species, have been observed at the same time, as well as spillover of the virus into mammals, such as raccoons, foxes, skunks, and other species.
"In Spring 2024, the HPAI virus began infecting #DairyCows, causing drops in milk production and other signs of illness. Unlike infections in other species, widespread death losses have not been associated with HPAI infections in dairy cows.
"About the same time as its emergence in dairy cows, the HPAI virus was implicated in deaths of domestic cats in the vicinity of affected farms. Most affected cats showed #neurologic signs, such as #tremors or #seizures, for a short period of time before dying.
"Since that time, three cases of substantial death losses in groups of outdoor domestic cats in South Dakota have been described. In each of these cases, there has been no apparent link to dairy cows, other livestock, or domestic poultry."
