Microsoft holds last Patch of the Year with 72 Gifts for Admins.

Microsoft resolved 72 vulnerabilities in a variety of its products, including a zero-day [CVE-2024-49138 (CVSS score: 7.8)] that’s been exploited by attackers in the wild to execute code with higher privileges, and 16 critical vulnerabilities (all of which are remote code execution flaws).

https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/releaseNote/2024-Dec

#microsoft #windows #update #it #security #privacy #engineer #media #tech #news
It's worth noting that CVE-2024-49138 is the fifth actively exploited CLFS privilege escalation flaw since 2022 after CVE-2022-24521, CVE-2022-37969, CVE-2023-23376 and CVE-2023-28252 (CVSS scores: 7.8). It's also the ninth vulnerability in the same component to be patched this year.

The fact that CLFS has become an attractive attack pathway for malicious actors has not gone unnoticed by Microsoft, which said it's working to add a new verification step when parsing such log files.

The number of fixed bugs in each vulnerability category is listed below:

• 27 Elevation of Privilege Vulnerabilities
• 30 Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities
• 7 Information Disclosure Vulnerabilities
• 5 Denial of Service Vulnerabilities
• 1 Spoofing Vulnerabilities
[This count does not include two Edge flaws that were previously fixed on December 5 and 6th.]

A single Mutation could bring Bird Flu a critical Step closer to a New Pandemic.

With the H5N1 bird flu virus spreading quickly across animals in the US, experts are on high alert for signs of human-to-human transmission. Such a jump could become far easier with just a single mutation, according to new research.

https://www.scripps.edu/news-and-events/press-room/2024/20241205-wilson-paulson-h5n1.html

The virus has a fatality rate of 50 percent in humans, so animal infections need to be carefully monitored and tightly controlled to stop the spreading strain of H5N1 adapting into something that one person can give directly to another.

"Our experiments revealed that the Q226L mutation could significantly increase the virus ability to target and attach to human-type receptors," says biochemist James Paulson. "This mutation gives the virus a foothold on human cells that it didn't have before, which is why this finding is a red flag for possible adaptation to people."

<Receptor binding site of the A/Texas/37/2024 hemagglutinin Leu226 mutant (yellow) in complex with the human receptor analog LSTc (cyan).>

While several of these morphing mutations are usually needed to put humans in danger from avian influenza, this time the transformation process could be quicker, scientists from the Scripps Research Institute in California found.

"The findings demonstrate how easily this virus could evolve to recognize human-type receptors," says infectious disease scientist Ting-Hui Lin, first author of the new study.

The researchers also investigated the H5N1 2.3.4.4b strain of the virus found in recent human infections, finding that a single amino acid mutation in a key protein would be enough to switch the virus target from avian-type receptors to human-type receptors.

A new Phone Scanner that detects Spyware has already found 7 Pegasus Infections.

[Journalists, human rights defenders, lawmakers and political officials are frequent targets of state surveillance.]

The mobile device security firm iVerify has been offering a tool that makes spyware scanning accessible to anyone.

#android #iphone #spyware #scanner #pegasus #it #security #privacy #engineer #media #tech #news
Of 2,500 device scans that the company's customers elected to submit for inspection, seven revealed infections by the notorious NSO Group malware known as Pegasus.

In recent years, commercial spyware has been deployed by more actors against a wider range of victims, but the prevailing narrative has still been that the malware is used in targeted attacks against an extremely small number of people. At the same time, though, it has been difficult to check devices for infection, leading individuals to navigate an ad hoc array of academic institutions and NGOs that have been on the front lines of developing forensic techniques to detect mobile spyware. Last week, the mobile device security firm iVerify is publishing findings from a spyware detection feature it launched in May.

The company's “Mobile Threat Hunting” feature uses a combination of malware signature-based detection, heuristics & machine learning to look for anomalies in iOS and Android device activity or telltale signs of spyware infection. For paying iVerify customers, the tool regularly checks devices for potential compromise. But the company also offers a free version of the feature for anyone who downloads the iVerify Basics app for $1. These users can walk through steps to generate and send a special diagnostic utility file to iVerify and receive analysis within hours. Free users can use the tool once a month.

[Donkey Kong] A famous 80's Game has just got a rather awesome Arcade to ZX Spectrum Conversion!

That same game which also appeared as a more recent Arcade to Amiga conversion by JOTD, has just arrived as a pretty incredible Arcade clone to the ZX Spectrum by Artonapilos.

And here's the latest from the developer. "Amazing clone of DONKEY KONG from arcade machines ported to the Spectrum. Developed by Artonapilos. When you load this game on your Spectrum you will be transported to the arcades of the 80s. Get ready for a trip back in time! This game is part of the definitive collection of arcade games cloned to the Zx Spectrum. They also exist in physical format".

In the early 80's Nintendo released one of the most famous games of all time, and that game was “Donkey Kong”. A game in which you played as Mario that had to avoid obstacles across a number of platforms, with sometimes a hammer in hand to save a damsel in distress from a giant barrel throwing ape called Donkey Kong.

Finland says latest Fiber-Optic Cable Break was an Accident, not Sabotage.

In an official statement, Finland's police said they have no ongoing criminal investigation into the recent cable break, dismissing previous reports that the incident was allegedly caused by malicious activity.

https://poliisi.fi/en/-/police-have-no-on-going-criminal-investigation-into-the-damage-caused-to-a-cable-between-finland-and-sweden-at-this-stage

#finland #underseacable #breach #it #engineer #media #tech #news
As of the time of writing, the cables had been repaired — a day after they were damaged at two separate locations in rural areas.

The incident caused a major internet outage in Finland, affecting 6,000 private customers and 100 businesses using the services of the local Global Connect and Elisa telecom operators. Most customer services linked to the cables have already been restored.

This week's incident follows recent breaches (intentional or not) of undersea cables in the Baltic Sea. Finland's authorities are currently investigating the damage to the cable that connects Finland and Germany. Earlier last month, another cable connecting Sweden and Lithuania was also damaged. Sweden, Germany and Lithuania have all launched criminal investigations into a Chinese ship that allegedly damaged those cables. It is not yet clear whether the incident was an accident or intentional.

German authorities said earlier in November that they assumed the damage to cables in the Baltic Sea was an act of sabotage. Last week, Sweden formally asked China to cooperate with an investigation into damage to the cables. Beijing has denied any involvement in sabotage and said it was willing to work on the investigation.

Spiders are somehow hacking Fireflies to lure more Victims.

What happens when an unfortunate bug ends up in a spider’s web? It gets bitten & wrapped in silk and becomes a meal. But if the web belongs to an orb-weaver and the bug is a male firefly, it seems the trapped firefly (once bitten) ends up imitating a female’s flash pattern & luring other males to their doom.

https://newatlas.com/biology/spiders-hack-fireflies-attract-webs/

#spider #firefly #hacking #nature #science #media #tech #news
Fireflies communicate with flash patterns (something you can experiment with yourself using nothing more than a green LED) and males looking to mate will fly around flashing a multi-pulse pattern with their two light-emitting lanterns. Females will tend to remain in one place and flash single-pulse patterns on their one lantern.

When a male spots a female, they swoop in to mate. Spiders have somehow figured out a way to actively take advantage of this, not just inserting themselves into the process but actively and masterfully manipulating male fireflies, causing them to behave in a way they would normally never do. All with the purpose of subverting firefly behavior for their own benefit.

It all started with an observation that almost all fireflies in webs were male, and careful investigation revealed it’s not just some odd coincidence. When spiders are not present, the male fireflies don’t act any differently. When a spider is present and detects a male firefly, the spider wraps and bites the firefly differently than other insects. It’s unknown exactly what happens, but this somehow results in the male firefly imitating a female’s flash patterns. Males see this and swoop in to mate, but with a rather different outcome than expected.

The research paper contains added details but it’s clear that there is more going on in this process than meets the eye. Spiders are already fascinating creatures (we’ve seen an amazing eye-tracking experiment on jumping spiders) and it’s remarkable to see this sort of bio-hacking going on under our very noses.

So I found this mini pc that's ryzen 7 from 2022 and supports up to 96GB of DDR5...

Just found this amazing item on AliExpress. Check it out!
$679.98 | GMKtec Mini Pc M7 AMD Ryzen7 PRO 6850H NUCBOX AMD Radeon™ 680M Window 11 Pro WIFI 6 USBC 4.0
https://a.aliexpress.com/_m0yER6R
It says it's only $300 for cyber monday...
It does not come with RAM or an SSD...

I feel like something like this would make a good budget gaming laptop replacement...

My only complaint about these processors are that they only have 16MB of L3 cache...
Thats still way up from my old gaming laptop that served me well and only had 6MB of cache and 1/4th the processing power...
So it could work.

$300 still isn't cheap given that a $50 xeon + $60 X99 motherboard could likely match this thing with at least twice the cache and cheaper RAM albeit with higher power consumption...
It does have nice integrated graphics tho so I guess you are paying for that.

Other than that it might be worth it to look for deals on nice X86 SBCs...

But I'll keep an eye on the chinese market for stuff like this.
