You can read the reports highlighting how industrial involvement in our scientific community drastically increased after 2018. I got out of academia because of it. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the outreach. I even think that looking inside a machine helps people understand better why they are people and not machines. Language is one of these things that are never taught in school (kids know more about the Big Bang than they do about the faculty that helps them think, believe and communicate). So perhaps showing how #AI fails to do language is the best way to describe what language actually is. But it is only a small part of my job description. /4

"We articulate a vision of artificial intelligence (AI) as normal technology. To view AI as normal is not to understate its impact—even transformative, general-purpose technologies such as electricity and the internet are “normal” in our conception. But it is in contrast to both utopian and dystopian visions of the future of AI which have a common tendency to treat it akin to a separate species, a highly autonomous, potentially superintelligent entity.

The statement “AI is normal technology” is three things: a description of current AI, a prediction about the foreseeable future of AI, and a prescription about how we should treat it. We view AI as a tool that we can and should remain in control of, and we argue that this goal does not require drastic policy interventions or technical breakthroughs. We do not think that viewing AI as a humanlike intelligence is currently accurate or useful for understanding its societal impacts, nor is it likely to be in our vision of the future.

The normal technology frame is about the relationship between technology and society. It rejects technological determinism, especially the notion of AI itself as an agent in determining its future. It is guided by lessons from past technological revolutions, such as the slow and uncertain nature of technology adoption and diffusion. It also emphasizes continuity between the past and the future trajectory of AI in terms of societal impact and the role of institutions in shaping this trajectory."

Money traditionally doesn't change hands — the expert, whether they're a political scientist or a dermatologist, builds their media profile, while the journo gets the quotes they need. But according to the Press Gazette, there are now some agencies that charge brand PRs to make those connections, and the "experts" they are quoting may be AI, rather than real people. "Laura Purkess, consumer features editor and consumer champion for The Sun, says she receives what appears to be AI-written copy in large batches from one particular PR following Responsesource requests. The PR has no surname or agency name and frequently posts three or more ready-written comments on virtually any subject within less than an hour of the request being posted."

"Consciousness is the only reason life has value. It’s the only reason anything matters. Otherwise life would just be physical materials getting whipped about by natural forces without anyone feeling, sensing or experiencing any part of it. There’d be no good reason to love anyone, because there wouldn’t be any conscious experience of love. Consciousness is the only reason life is worth living.

There is no basis on which to believe AI will ever be conscious. Consciousness isn’t some minor detail that science will easily work out once it gets around to it; it’s an all-encompassing phenomenon which has always been a complete mystery to all scientific fields. Science has no idea what consciousness is or why it happens, much less how to replicate it. It’s the single most important and fundamental aspect of every second of our waking experience of life, yet it remains a complete unknown to all of science. And this somehow gets left out of so much of the conversation about the future of artificial “intelligence”."

Google's AI is telling people that I am in favour of nuclear war*. Because of course it is. This reveals yet another problem with AI that makes things harder for us all.

It has been prominently pointed out that Google's AI thinks a nuclear war could be GOOD for society. However, this actually my fault. But it highlights yet more flaws with AI, rather than me.
