San Francisco's Muni Metro could be finally getting ready to wave goodbye to the antiquated and archaic floppy disk-based train control system. To make matters worse, the current tech used within the infrastructure communicates via wire loops, a system prone to disruptions and as sluggish as a dial-up modem, which doesn't help the network's regular train delays and a whole lot of commuter frustration​. And if something breaks down, is a spare part needed? They've had to be scrounged off online marketplaces such as eBay and borrowed from other transit agencies. I don't think it gets any more cutting edge than that. Looking to replace the old system, Muni Metro will adopt a brand-new, shiny communications-based train control (CBTC) system. This move aims finally to drag the Muni Metro kicking and screaming into not just the modern age with Wi-Fi and cellular technology, but through a portal in time when the Nintendo Game Boy Color was at the cutting-edge technology during that time period.

San Francisco’s Municipal Transportation Agency has approved a contract with Hitachi Rail for a new train control system. The replacement will move the Muni Metro off 1998 technology that runs on floppy disks.

Floored 1. On a recent foundation-funded trip to DC, I was starkly reminded of America's growing economic divide. Jen walking past unhoused person sleeping on street with jewelry store window in the background 2. While people slept on the sidewalk nearby, I was put up in a hotel that catered to every conceivable human desire for comfort* *a rare occurrence Jen in large bed with high thread count sheets and mints on the bedside table. Thought balloon reads "This is so great." 3. The next night, I found myself sleeping on an airport floor alongside hundreds of people whose flights were canceled. Jen uncomfortably lying on airport floor using a backpack as a pillow. Outside the window it is snowing on the tarmac Thought balloon: "I would never survive on the streets." At least I still had access to bathrooms and $15 prepackaged sandwiches. 4. It occurred to me that this is the only public space where it's socially acceptable to have no place to sleep. Wide shot of several people lying on airport floor and flopped on chairs ... a tiny bourgeois taste of the real thing.

OpenStreetMap plot of the area described by NTSB where Alaska 1282 debris was found "near Southwest Barnes Road and Oregon 217". The point shows Barnes & 217 but it was apparently found in a nearby residential area. NTSB and news media are not naming the person who found it except as "Bob" to protect his privacy.

There's a spot in the #GobiDesert where sunset briefly casts light on the face of these cliffs. On the day of my visit it was cloudy and it appeared that I was out of luck. But as there was a fleeting moment where the sun broke through. I have tweeked the brightness-contrast to make the shot more attractive to me.
