"Like most people who follow technology, we’ve been fans of WIRED since before we became journalists ourselves, and we’re especially happy to partner with the legendary title now that it is home to many of our talented former co-workers at VICE. We’re regularly jealous of their features and scoops, and are proud that some of our investigations will be published alongside of their excellent work. By getting our articles in front of WIRED’s audience, we hope some of its readers will decide to become 404 Media subscribers themselves, and with more reach comes the potential for generating more impact with our journalism."

Teenagers Tell Us About Their Relationship With News

how and why media — online, in print, and on TV — treats news as a product, and how that shapes the way they think and feel. Some said that made them not want to be informed, but many others shared their strategies for navigating the noise

Over 20 years ago I wrote a book where I argued new information technologies might bring about a quantitive change (things done quicker) but changed little qualitatively about society; the new information economy was still capitalism.

Little (apart from relatively marginal things like Mastodon) has changed that argument.

Despite the promises of the internet utopians, we live in an information capitalism that often feels like a C19th economic system....

Capacities could be a very good alternative to Obsidian Notes

Person sitting with legs crossed and outstretched, with a laptop resting on their legs. On the screen can be seen some images with the title at the top Oct 2024. To the right is a month calendar.
I’ve only had a brief look and test so far, but I’ll be testing this out a lot more. Obsidian is free to use but not open source software, Capacities is the same with a generous free option and is not open source software either.

Something quite different, but useful, is that Capacities is cloud synced first, so the various clients all sync via the cloud for free (unlike Obsidian which can be a bit clunky via Syncthing or similar sync software).

Obsidian is more offline first in Markdown format for full portability between other note apps. Capacities however does export (and backup) to various formats including PDF, Markdown, MS Word, and Latex. I’m just not seeing a bulk export yet of selected notes (called pages in Capacities) to these various formats. I’m testing this a bit more still.

Getting some notes from Obsidian into Capacities so far was just a matter of copy and pasting. I just had to copy and paste any images separately into the note. Tables, code snippets, headings, etc all came across perfectly.

Speaking of code snippets, I do really like that you can tag each one as a bash script, Python code, Lua code, etc, and it does a great job of syntax highlighting (something I was not seeing in Obsidian).

Capacities does not yet have all the plugins that Obsidian has, but for many who were thinking of starting to use Obsidian, Capacities may be a good option to consider.

I’ll also be interested to see what the Linux app (in development) stores locally and how well it works offline. There are already desktop apps for macOS and Windows (and mobile apps for Android and iOS).

The Palestine Laboratory, How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation around the world (2023)

"How Israel makes a killing from the occupation.
Israel’s military industrial complex uses the occupied, Palestinian territories as a testing ground for weaponry and surveillance technology that they then export around the world to despots and democracies. For more than 50 years, occupation of the West Bank and Gaza has given the Israeli state invaluable experience in controlling an “enemy” population, the Palestinians. It’s here that they have perfected the architecture of control. "

How Israel Exports The #Technology Of #Occupation Around The World

For more than 50 years, occupation of the West Bank and Gaza has given the Israeli state invaluable experience in controlling an “enemy” population, the Palestinians. It’s here that they have perfected the architecture of control.
(...)
This book shows in-depth, for the first time, how Palestine has become the perfect laboratory for the Israeli military-techno complex: surveillance, home demolitions, indefinite incarceration and brutality to the hi-tech tools that drive the ‘Start-up Nation’. From the Pegasus software that hacked Jeff Bezos’ and Jamal Khashoggi’s phones, the weapons sold to the Myanmar army that has murdered thousands of Rohingyas and drones used by the European Union to monitor refugees in the Mediterranean who are left to drown.
Israel has become a global leader in spying technology and defence hardware that fuels the globe’s most brutal conflicts.
As ethno-nationalism grows in the 21st century, Israel has built the ultimate model....

My husband and I are fed up with earbuds! o(`ω´ )o They're giving him infections and mine won't ever stay in my ears! (My ear canals are too small and naturally push them out! 😂).

We're now enjoying the pleasures of wireless bone conduction headsets. Worlds better, and I'm so glad I can still hear everything going on around me!

Sound-wise, for people who need full sound spectrum enjoyment, traditional padded headphones are superior, but this wireless option is perfect for exercise & light duty! It's nice listening to music without physical pain!

We bought the C2 model. I'm sure there are better ones out there but for the money, we're satisfied. ☺️

One area where language models might actually be good is emulating a type system for dynamic languages.

Given how good these things are at figuring out general shape of the code, I suspect they could fairly accurately tell you argument and return types for functions. And you could probably get away with a pretty small model if it only targets a specific language.

I'm kind of surprised nobody's tried doing this yet.

This week on Re-Creative, Joe (@ilanderz) and I are joined by the famed cyberpunk author Bruce Sterling (@bruces) from his studio in Torino (Turin), Italy. We discuss Primo Levi's prophetic story about AI and art, The Versifier, which Bruce and the Share Festival are in the process of creating!

Here's a brilliant article about the opaque and broken world of programmatic advertising.

These platforms truly are a cesspit.

They are causing billions of ad dollars from reputable brands to be pumped into disinformation sites.

Meanwhile, ads are systematically blocked from appearing on reputable news sites that have articles that include words like "Palestine", "black", or "gay".

And the biggest player in this industry? Google!

Just another way Google is enshittifying the internet for profit.

The Sleepy Copyright Office in the Middle of a High-Stakes Clash Over AI

The attention stems from a first-of-its-kind review of copyright law in the age of artificial intelligence. The #technology — which feeds off creative content — has upended traditional norms around #copyright, which gives owners of books, movies and music the exclusive ability to distribute and copy their works.

Many people are rightly talking about a major ‘crisis of competency’ taking over the US, what with the latest Boeing Max door failure as well.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, we had a major revelation from Ukrainian soldiers that the reason none of their Abrams are on the front is because they don’t work. Recall the recent reports of the highly sensitive Abrams, which need their filters changed every hour. But they took it a step further and actually showed a damning video of their Abrams gun all janky, its stabilizers completely shot.
