We look down on an array of colorful semicircular fans. They're decorated with thin bands in many hues of brown and orange. Each fan stands erect and is attached to a tree trunk by the fan's "handle". The bands of color emerge from this point of attachment like the crests of the waves produced by plopping a pebble into a stream. The fan's outer edge is ragged and rounded, spreading like a lazy cat's toes. Bright sunshine makes everything warm and cozy.

Greenwashing in Blackpool?

United Utilities are funding (to the tune of £1.8m) part of on-going programme to plant trees in Blackpool.... in the face of some dying, or be killed by climate change & others being dug up & stolen (sadly confirming the stereotypes of Blackpool's social problems).

Whether this will shift bill-payers perceptions of UU's record on water & sewage management is a different matter.... but more trees is always good!

Dead #trees are not wasted timber dollars - they are sources of food for literally thousands of beings in a #forest #ecosystem, from tiny microscopic beings to insectivorous birds. Standing dead trees are known as snags, while a fallen dead trees are nurse logs. A cut or natural stump can serve the same #ecological function as a #NurseStump.

Nature wastes nothing. If there is a nutrient source to be had, there is a being to benefit from it. Nurse logs, standing snags & nurse stumps play hosts to all sorts of mosses, lichens, fungi, insects & arthropods, many hidden deep inside, as well as other living beings that prey on them.

Nurse #stumps are still deeply rooted; new plant, tree & fungi life grows out of their tops. Nurse stumps & dead stumps that have no new growth atop are like anchor systems for living trees growing in forests. You destabilize the ecosystem when you remove them from their natural #environment.

A bizarrely twisted tree in a sunlit woodland clearing, surrounded by a carpet of dry brown leaves. The tree curls back down on itself, its thick branches snaking tightly around its own trunk and curling into the ground. The general appearance is beautifully monstrous, as though the branches were tentacles. A roughly circular scar on the bark where you might expect to see an eye, if this were a creature, strengthens its Cthulhu-like vibes. A few metres beyond it are ferns and upright trees.

The beautiful & rare, open grown ‘Summergill Brook Ash’, that probably was a part of an ancient Ash Silvopasture, sitting near the Wales - England boarder, 300 - 400 years old, without ash dieback! It would of witness ‘The Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the British Civil Wars’. It stands strong, with a slightly more decayed Ancient Ash neighbour downstream, holding the oxbow together. 6.96m in girth an Ancient Tree. Black and white image.
