A very crowded art space with a bed! The Paolozzi Studio This is a recreation of the two main London studios where Eduardo Paolozzi lived and worked. Paolozzi's gift to the National Galleries of Scotland consists of three thousand sculptures (mostly plaster casts) and moulds, two thousand prints and drawings, three thousand books and a large collection of the artist's tools and materials, toys, periodicals, scrapbooks, manuscripts, photographs, and slides. The studio reconstruction, conceived and carried out by the National Galleries of Scotland in collaboration with the artist and his assistant, contains most of this material. The large studio table supports a variety of media for sculpture, e.g. wax, plaster, and bronze. The work stations on either side of the entrance show paper-cutting for image-gathering and collage. The space below the sleeping platform houses the bulk of the artist's library, a plan chest of prints, and an area for making scrapbooks. The wooden boxes stacked around the walls are full of small plaster elements that are collaged together to make composite sculptures and installations. Examples of Paolozzi's home- made furniture, e.g. stools and plinths, are interspersed throughout the room.

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 192.

There are a fair amount of novels about the art world, but Hari Kunzru' new book, Blue Ruin (2024) is certainly one of the better ones. Its a tale of two young artists & their divergent careers/lives. He uses the story (told as a reflection on events by one of the artists) to offer an interestng but critical view of the contemporary world of art & its business end(s). Very readable & thought provoking, I really enjoyed it!

I came face to face with a whole room full of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder whilst I was in Vienna recently. I can stand and look at his paintings for ages - absorbing all the fascinating detail.
This one is The Tower of Babel, painted in around 1563. There is a very similar painting in Rotterdam, but this one is much the bigger of the two.

Doom, the iconic first person shooter, is often used to showcase how the open source game can run on almost any device you can think of. The hack came after researchers discovered vulnerabilities in the Alarmo's STM32H7 microcontroller, enabling custom firmware installation through its USB-C port.
YouTuber GaryOderNichts demonstrated the 2.8-inch circular alarm clock running Chocolate Doom natively, using the device's wheel for movement and side buttons for weapons. The hack requires no hardware modifications and works on the current 2.0 software version. Gary said it’s “possible to load the shareware version of Doom entirely from USB, without modifying the Alarmo.” And they’ve put the software and instructions for running it on Github, so almost any sufficiently knowledgeable and determined Alarmo owner can do it, too. While everyone was waiting on news for the successor of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo released the Alarmo. A small plastic alarm clock that can wake one up with sounds from ones favorite Nintendo games. The Alarmo has a small 2.8-inch LCD at the front, a back and notification button on top and a dial on top which can be turned and pressed to act as a confirm button. The dial also includes an RGB LED. What makes it different from other alarm clocks? It has 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to download software updates and additional themes, and it comes with a 24GHz mmWave presence sensor to react to your movements. <Inside there is an STM32H730ZBI6 MCU and a KIOXIA 4GB eMMC.>

The last few days had been full of especially loud booms. It's been hard on my mental health to have the sudden shakes of windows and loud booms in the otherwise serenity of the Gaza envelope kibbutzim, mine is Kibbutz Gevim. I create to calm down and heal, I've been less capable of communication and promotion for my small business and fixated more on creation. Today I took my black doll with a few new sets to photograph at a stunning location with those pink desert flowers I love so much.
