New blog post:
Folktales for Election Time

There are many elections happening around the world, so I thought it was timely to collect some folktales on the topic. They can be used to spark discussions on leadership, democracy, choices, and social responsibility.

Had a "spin the globe" gig today. I love doing this #storytelling program: kids get to spin, and wherever they point, I tell a story from that place (or in case of the oceans, about that place). It was great fun, and the (elementary school) kids were super enthralled by the spinning globe, finding countries, asking questions.
I am just proud that I could remember all the stories (out of 206) they chose 😅😅

Folklore from 19th century Crete:

A caterpillar infestation hit the vineyards one year. When all else failed, people formally summoned the caterpillars to court, threatening them with legal prosecution.
When that failed too, women exposed themselves in the vineyards, hoping that the caterpillars would be so scandalized they would leave on their own.

Organic agriculture. No pesticides.

Wrote a blog post about my most recent research adventure, trying to track down animal species mentioned in a folktale. It was a wild ride, and I learned a lot about why it is woth doing your homework on animal tales.

19th century British folktale translators be like

*Native bird name* = Pidgeon
*Native songbird name* = Blackbird
*Native raptor name* = Eagle
*Native antelope name* = Deer
*Native name for jackal* = Clever Fox
*Native name for any feline* = Tiger

🤦‍♀️

Today in #MinCup24 Corundum gets the storytelling vote. I have recently done a whole two-hour program on just folktales and legends about corundum (sapphires and rubies).

You can find many of the stories on my blog:

This week for our One from the Vaults selections, I have seven essential books on #folklore!

Today's #MinCup24 match is difficult: both Rhodochrosite and Turquoise are in the running for the storytelling vote!

However, my vote goes to Rhodochrosite because it reminds me of the German legend of King Laurin's Rose Garden. Laurin was a Dwarf king of the mountains called the Rose Garden, and all of their mineral treasures. That always reminded me of Rhodochrosite (lit. a rose-colored mineral).

For Turquoise legends, see here:

#FolktaleMoment from a French folktale explaining how having a Permanently Forlorn Princess affects the kingdom's economy.

Princess is sad >> Everyone else is sad to be respectful >> No one is spending on entertainment on vices >> People are saving a lot of money >> People are giving a lot of dowry and inheritance to their kids >> King is taking in a lot in taxes and bureaucratic fees.

🤷‍♀️

Matthew Meyer's new yokai book has a fascinating tale about a fisherman who married a mermaid.

When the couple ran into financial trouble the mermaid wanted to work as a courtesan but wasn't very good at it. Then they remembered that eating mermaid flesh is said to grant immortality. Not wanting to actually sell flesh, the couple opened a "Mermaid Licking Shop" instead where people could lick the mermaid for a few extra healthy years.

They grew rich and lived happily ever after.

For today's round of #MinCup24 the storytelling vote goes to copper 😄

It features into some of my favorite folktales and legends:

- The City of Brass (1001 Nights), where djinn are captured in copper vessels and adventurers explore a magical city

- The Copper Forest, a Hungarian folktale where one of the stereotypical three princesses is actually in love with the enemy king, and finds a way to marry him in the end

#StorytellingPSA

If you source the folktales in your book as "Aboriginal", "Native American" or - my personal favorite - "African", you immediately tell me that you have done zero research on any of them.

Do better.

Also while on the topic of dogs:

My family has running folklore that you get your personality from your first childhood dog. 😄 I was born alongside a litter of puli puppies so I am a fast learner and super high strung 😅

(I imagine this applies to other pets too?)

#folklore #dogs #dogstodon #InternationalDogDay #MythologyMonday

#MythologyMonday and Dogs:

Not a myth, but kinda Bible-related? There is a Hungarian legend that says the first puli dog was created by Jesus Christ to help out a kind shepherd who could never successfully corral his sheep.

Jesus clearly had a knack for fancy design, making these adorable barking mops.

#dogs #DogsOfMastodon #folklore
Photo of a white puli dog sitting in green grass. It is a dog with thick, dreadlocked fur, so it looks like a white mop with a black nose and a pink tongue.

Happy #WorldFolkloreDay !

This is your seasonal reminder that you are Folk.

Folklore did not stop evolving 100 years ago. Or with books. Or with television. Or with the internet.

Your own culture's folklore is yours to cherish, preserve, update, reimagine, play, live, and pass on better than you found it.

I am working on this "folktales about misunderstood animals" collection for children. However, I am accidentally accumulating a bunch of tales about misunderstood animals that are only fit for adults* 😄

I don't think my publisher would go for it, but now I want to work on it anyway...

(* no, not THAT way, just in terms of violence or complexity.)

Hungarian #FolktaleMoment

The hero of the folktale finds out that the king he works for used to be the King of the Land of Eternal Youth. He was exiled from his kingdom by spiders because he was cruel to them and wanted to kill them off.

So now the Land of Eternal Youth is ruled by friendly spiders.

I think I found the funniest version of "The tortoise and the hare" tale type just now 😄 From Japan.

It is about a centipede and a slug running a race to a shrine. Obviously the centipede gets there first, but when the slug arrives, centipede is still taking his sandals off, so slug enters the shrine first.

😆

Honestly, the more I read the Folktale Motif Index, the more it feels like the original clickbait 😆

"Old man cheats crocodile by playing on its ignorance of agriculture."

#FolktaleMoment of the day:

One of those folktales where someone has to make a princess laugh, except this time the suitor is a well built blacksmith from Gascogne, and he walks in and the princess immediately smiles

:blobcatflirty: 👸 😄

Edit: the blacksmith's helper is a nicotine-addicted tobacco-farting rat

Folktale niche that I keep running into:

Quaint and adorable explanations for horrifying natural phenomena.
So far I have had cicadas growing "little umbrellas" (parasitic fungus) and a wasp rewarded by God with grubs turning into his children (wasp that puts eggs in live grubs). 😬 😬

Going through permission requests for my upcoming folktale collection. I'd just like to note that publishing permission for the average folktale costs somewhere between $250-400

Folktales are expensive y'all

#FolktaleMoment of the day:

According to a Lepcha folktale, bats are the only creatures that don't have to pay taxes 😄 That's because the King of the Birds and the King of the Rats couldn't decide who should tax them.

"So that is why the bat is free from all taxation. Everybody in the world pays some sort of revenue, even we human beings, but the bat is free and doesn’t."

I guess the bat took the "tax" out of "taxonomy"...

😄 🤷‍♀️ 🦇

Today's folklore research WTF:

The Russian tale "Prince Ivan, the Firebird, and the Grey Wolf" has been translated to English in the 19th century by Edith Hodgetts as

"The Grey Wolf and the Golden Cassowary"

And now I can't not imagine the prince trying to wrangle

A damn FLYING CASSOWARY

(This is why you double check translations, people)

😬 😆

It is #InternationalCatDay and I just happened to be reading a Japanese legend about Okesa neko today.

She was a calico cat raised by a poor old woman. When they ran out of food, the cat turned herself into a beautiful geisha to earn money for the old lady. She enchanted everyone with her marvelous singing and dancing.

However, when a ship captain spied her true form (eating fish heads), she chased him in a dark cloud and kidnapped him from his ship.

#JejuIsland has a tradition of eight snake gods, who are a mother and seven sisters from the seven stars (Chilseong) of the Big Dipper in the North, in charge of riches and prosperity. These are their domains:

Daughter 1: Harvest grandmother (= goddess)
Daughter 2: Administration and criminal law enforcement
Daughter 3: Keeper of prisons
Daughter 4: Orchard grandmother
Daughter 5: Keeper of storehouses
Daughter 6: Government office grandmother
Daughter 7: Outer chilseong of the fields
Mother: Inner chilseong of the house

(See thread for how they came to be gods, and mind the content warnings!)

Today's #MythologyMonday theme is Sisters.

As it happens I just finished reading the Bengali epic of Manasa, the Snake Goddess. She is an accidental daughter of Shiva. She spends the entire epic trying to gain recognition among the gods, and then among mortals.

She is supported all the way by her sister Neta, who is the perfect balance of intelligence and calculation to Manasa's flares of fury and power. They made a great duo 🐍

The third animal presented itself today 😄 I went to the lake, and suddenly a large carp poked its head out, looked at me, moved its mouth, and let me pet its back. 😄
I am ready for my quest!

#folklore #folktales #animals #nature

Walking home late last night I saved a drunk bumblebee from the bike path and then shepherded a small frog off the road. I am waiting for the third animal before I embark on a quest where they will come to my aid. 😄

My favorite moment from the Bengali epic of the Snake Goddess so far:

A king pissess off the goddess by destroying her altar, so she sends an army of snakes against him. Surrounded by serpents he flees into a haystack to hide - and comes face to face with a chameleon.

The chameleon just shakes its head, and the king breaks down crying. That was the last straw.

Such a fun moment. 🐍🐍🐍🦎

😄

#WomensEpics that need an English translation ASAP, round two:

- Catakantaravanan: a Tamil epic that elaborates on the Ramayana, but in this story, it is Sita who fights a demon king

- Matabagka Seeks the Deity of the Wind: epic from the Philippines about a girl's heroic journey (this one has an English translation, but only in a thesis manuscript in the UP library)

My retail therapy is ordering translations of underappreciated epics online late at night.

The more research I do for this #WomensEpics reading project, the more epics I find out about that need English translations a.s.a.p. Like. Seriously.

Looks like my next folktale collection is going to be about misunderstood animals 🥰😊 What are your favorite misunderstood, misrepresented, or underappreciated animals?
