A Window to the Soul, Scotland (2024).

As promised, a different take on this spectacular view point overlooking the ancient Caledonian Forest. These two pines were gathering some wonderful dappled light and framing the loch beautifully — although balancing the composition wasn't without its difficulties on this very steep slope.

Ce jour-là eût lieu un curieux phénomène . En effet l’étoile polaire, brillant beaucoup plus fort qu’à l’ordinaire, apparût à l’est et s’éleva lentement dans le ciel. Quand elle comprit qu’elle avait été dupée par une lune d’humeur farceuse, la Pointe de l’Échelle en rougit de honte.

Close Encounters | Colorado | 2022

When I was driving into my local state park, I noticed the long shadows cast from the barren trees from the early morning sun. How would I go about capturing such a busy scene as the light poured around the trees? The elements I wanted to portray included diagonal lines intersecting with vertical lines from the trees, alternating light and shadow, and a bit of motion and ethereal quality from ICM to create this final image.

July 19, 1983: I felt terrific as I followed the Appalachian Trail along streets through the town. Duncannon was a small city with a downtown business district consisting of a few square blocks of mid- to early twentieth-century buildings like the Doyle Hotel quickly giving way to tree-lined residential streets.

Beneath an extremely hazy whitewashed summer sky we are at a lookout high up a mountainside looking hundreds of feet down at a lush green valley where two major rivers join into one very large river. Impressive arch bridges span the mouths of both rivers, connecting the riverbank on or left to the peninsula between the rivers and then the riverbank on our right. There are wide swathes of forest along all the riverbanks, with the outskirts of a small city to our left. The rest of the valley is farm fields and pastures. A long, flattish ridge, barely visible through miles of thick humidity, rises from the far end of the valley.

In the foreground is an expanse of water (a lake) extending to the middle distance where it meets the tree lined shores to the east. The sun is just over the horizon but behind low clouds that are colored and illuminated by it's light. A mist rises from the water's surface, those parts not covered by it reflect the clouds and opposite shore. In the distance on the left we can just make out five geese paddling across the water. Can you hear them honking?

This was a challenging photo. I captured it about 7 years ago while driving from Salt Lake City up to southern Montana to be in a friend's wedding. When I started looking into the logistics of my arrival time, I realized there would be an opportunity to photograph the Milky Way somewhere under the dark skies of northern Utah or southern Idaho. Not wanting to stray too far off the highway, I looked for areas that might offer a unique foreground for the composition.

I soon realized that the highway alignment (northwest to southeast) would allow for a "highway to the stars" type of image, and started looking for an ideal overpass. This one caught my eye and I couldn't have been happier with the results. It took some time to capture, as it was necessary to get all of the Milky Way images without traffic on the highway, and then of course I needed to get a few images with light trails from the cars on the highway below.

I didn't have star tracker at the time, but other than that there are few things I would've changed considering the challenge and how it turned out!

Thunderous

This is gorgeous Dynjandi, it's name derived from the #Icelandic "dynja" meaning "thunder".

Situated in Arnarfjörður in the #Westfjords of #Iceland, this wedding veil of water is the topmost of seven drops.
In total, it tumbles down 100m/328ft of mountainside.
The top falls has this lovely shape - 30m/98ft wide at the top and 60m/197ft at the bottom - due to basalt steps in the rock, which slow down the water and aerate it.
