Today's #RomanceTropesInFolklore post:
"Chic and Awe"

It's the name of the trope (according to TV Tropes) where someone expects a stranger to look unattractive, and then they show up and turn out to be hot.

And then they fall in love, obviously.

#FolktaleMoment of the day, from a Hungarian Roma folktale:

A man sets out with a sword and encounters a sleeping 7-headed dragon. Not wanting to kill it while it is asleep, he lies down and snuggles it. The dragon wakes up later, sees the sleeping man, and decides to not kill it while asleep either.

(They do fight later on.)

Today's #FolktaleMoment from the motif index:

"E693.2. Woman reborn as bedbug to take revenge on husband."

I am barely ready for this year's A to Z Blogging, but I am already super excited for next year's theme 😅

I just decided that I'll do another reading challenge - reading 26 epics about women.

And yes, I already have a list. 26 traditional epics with female protagonists from around the world.

Hopefully a year will be enough to read all of them 😄

I just found out that there is an entire folktale type where a husband (going on a long journey) asks Satan to guard his wife's modesty. The devil spends the rest of the story chasing and scaring various lovers away, until he gives up the task as hopeless.

Is it just me, or would this be a great premise for a supernatural romance story 🤣🤣

There is an Italian folktale about three sisters who are courted by a mysterious man. The two elder sisters reject him because he is only ever seen at night. The third one agrees to marry him. Turns out that he transforms into a tortoise during the day.

I now want to see a modern retelling of this were the youngest sister is a Twilight fangirl and is all like "oooh he must be a vampire!!!"

And then boom, tortoise 🐢

Something about the hype around #Damsel just rubs me the wrong way. The whole "this is no fairy tale" spin is annoying. Have you ever read more than two fairy tales in your life? I can list you hundreds of traditional stories where women kill monsters and save themselves. Seriously.

Quit shitting on folklore without knowing it.

Also, I recently heard the term "add a sword feminism" and it is very accurate.

#TFW you do three hours of research into a story, only to finally remember you have already blogged about it two years ago... 😅

(granted, didn't dig this deep last time...)

Happy #LunarNewYear! We are entering the Year of the Dragon.

So, I wrote a blog post of my favorite dragon folktales and legends where dragons are friendly and helpful. Or even falling in love ❤️

*NEW POST* (ish)

I have completely rewritten my article regarding Ann Morgan to reflect my most up to date research, including the information about her burial. This lengthy but important post is the definitive account of her story, and thus, I am very excited to share it with you! Nanny Morgan deserves to be remembered 💚

Seeking fiction or non-fiction writers/folklorists/academics who can speak to #fairy / #fae legends anywhere that's NOT Britain and Ireland.

Likewise, someone who writes/has written about and researched changelings.

It's for the next Writing the Occult event on 6 April, and will attract a modest monetary reward. Recommendations, please, humans and otherwise of the algorithm?

I am reading this Icelandic folktale where a prince cursed into being a dog is saved when another prince lets him sleep in his bed on his wedding night.

I am here for this fairy tale polycule. 😄

I am reading Icelandic Christmas tales and there is an unreasonable number of hands being chopped off... 😆😆

So, Mammal of the Year 2024 in Hungary is the wildcat, in case anyone was interested 😄

It reminds me of a favorite folktale of mine from Austria, about a boy given the name Wildcat by a mysterious godfather who lives in the woods and rides a giant black cat. 😄 Which I think is infinitely cooler than a fairy godmother.

My Follow Friday recommendation for this week is @TarkabarkaHolgy .

She’s a professional storyteller and author who I’ve known online for years.

Her feed is filled with references to stories and myths from every corner of the globe. I also love her occassional anecdotes about Dungeons & Dragons and parenting. She has a fantastic sense of humour.

I have been consistently failing a Constellation Myths plan year after year... might be time to actually do it this time. I want to do constellation myths outside of the ones everyone knows... ✨

So there's this Greek myth that says Zeus was fed by bees when he was born. In gratitude, he blessed them with the color of "shining bronze", and made them immune to cold and harsh winds. These bees lived in Zeus' sacred cave in Crete, and aggressively chased away anyone who tried to steal their honey.

Any #apiarist or #entomology expert out there who could tell me what these bees are by any chance?...

This book just arrived 🥰
I read the first volume for Following Folktales Around the World, and it was one of the highlights of the entire challenge. I am super excited for the new stories 🥰🥰🥰

Slowly working my way through Ghosts, Monsters and Demons of India by @blaft It's an amazing read. Today's favorite is the demon that kills people by spinning around and smacking them with one very long boob.

#FolkloreMoment : Once, the dike next to the river Weser burst at Rechtenfleth, and the locals labored for several seasons to repair it - but the hole never seemed to fill up, no matter how much sand they poured into it.

Then they asked a wise woman for advice. She told them: "You will labor until Judgment Day if you don't appease the Heavens. Grab the first person to pass by the next morning, throw them into the depths, and construct the dike above them."

The first person who passed by was a rich, prideful farmer named Heuer. Then they grabbed him, threw him into the hole, and built the dike above him like the wise woman said. The ground bekame solid, and the dike was soon completed with God's aid.

But the dike was called "Heuer's Dike" since then, and it is said that during quiet nights there is groaning and wailing in the depths at this site.

If you dig too deeply, you might reach the realms of the dwarves.

Which... probably is something you want to avoid.

#FolkloreMoment: Once, a "devout and noble-minded" young man regularly visited his girlfriend who was equally "devout and noble-minded". She welcomed him into her chamber during every night of the full noon.

Once, he found her weeping and asked her what was wrong and how he could help her.

"You can't help me. Go and fetch me a woman!"

So he went out at midnight, and encountered Percht, a female spirit of the mountain. She asked him where he was going.

"I go to fetch a woman who can help my beloved!"

"Well, then I won't harm you - which I would have done if you were doing something bad. But I want to ask for a favor. Won't you carve a wooden nail for my wagon?"

The young man agreed to do so, and Percht told him to keep all the wood shavings, for he would regret it if he left one behind.

And when he finally returned to his beloved, she was well and healthy and "a large bird had lowered a little boy through the chimney".

Oh, and he discovered that all the wood shavings had turned into gold and silver coins.

... I think this is what the TV Tropes Wiki calls "Getting Crap Past the Radar". It sounds like the two of them could have used some sex education, but at least it all turned out well for them in the end.

#FolkloreMoment : Once, a "Wild Maiden", a spirit of the mountains, fell in love with a farmer - but the farmer was already married.

But the farmer's wife knew how vengeful the Wild Maidens could be if their wishes were thwarted in any way. Thus, she was careful never to display the slightest bit of jealousy, handed over all her conjugal rights, and even made sure that the Wild Maiden was comfortable when sleeping in the bed.

In gratitude, the Wild Maiden blessed the farm and the descendants of the farmer when she finally left.

Antoninus Liberalis keeps on giving. Today's favorite myth is "Hercules talks a himbo into dumping his abusive boyfriend."

#mythology #folklore #storytelling #classics

Antoninus Liberalis also mentions that on Crete people worshiped Leto the Grafter, a goddess who changed a woman into a man by "grafting organs on him". Just saying.
