📰 Ben & Jerry's is back in court again, and this time it's #suing its parent company #Unilever over accusations that it silenced the #IceCream maker's attempts to express support for a #ceasefire in #Gaza and support #Palestinian #refugees.

In a #lawsuit filed on Wednesday, Ben & Jerry's said Unilever breached the terms of a previous agreement that gave the ice cream company responsibility over its "social mission".

Despite this, Ben & Jerry's said it was #silenced four separate times when it tried calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, advocating for halting US military aid to #Israel, supporting university #students #protesting against Israel's war on Gaza, and supporting the safe passage of Palestinian refugees from Gaza to the UK.

A new Israeli law banning the U.N. Palestinian relief agency from operating in its territory is due to come into effect in January, and it could deny thousands of people in Gaza their main source of aid. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/11/13/world/hunger-gaza-israel-unrwa-ban/ #worldnews #unrwa #middleeast #israel #gaza #israelhamaswar #palestinians #hamas #benjaminnetanyahu #iran #lebanon #hezbollah #hunger #aid #refugees

„[F]or officials in Lebanon, the influx of returnees comes as a silver lining to the war between Israel and Hezbollah that has killed more than 3,000 people and displaced some 1.2 million in Lebanon. Some in Syria hope the returning refugees could lead to more international assistance and relief from western sanctions.“

Viet Thanh Nguyen on Being Canceled Over Palestine: What if those were your people in Gaza?

In this episode of #FridayNightSemites, we sit down with Pulitzer Prize-winning author and professor Viet Thanh Nguyen, acclaimed for his book The Sympathizer (now a brilliant show on HBO Max). We discuss his experience of being canceled for speaking out for a ceasefire after October 7 and his thoughts on boycotting other artists—even those he strongly disagrees with. Viet opens up about the backlash he’s faced for standing in solidarity with Palestine, and we explore the myths, propaganda, and language shaping public perception of the Middle East.

He dives into his political differences within the Vietnamese-American community, how the U.S. treats immigrants versus refugees, and offers advice to young writers on creating political art during times of war and crisis. We also cover the broader themes of decolonization, anti-Semitism, and the colonial origins of how we talk about the Middle East. This is a no-holds-barred conversation on solidarity, history, and speaking truth to power when the stakes are high.

Whether you’re interested in the politics of Palestine, anti-colonialism, or how to navigate controversial conversations in the literary and academic world, this episode is for you. Join us as we unpack these critical issues with honesty and a bit of humor—because if we don’t laugh, we’ll cry.

#Thailand ’s labor minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said he had ordered the evacuation of all Thai #workers from the north of #Israel to the south, after four Thais were killed by rocket fire while working on farms near Israel’s border with Lebanon.

Maris Sangiampongsa, Thailand’s foreign minister, confirmed the deaths of four workers, and said another had been injured close to the town of Metula near the Israeli-Lebanese border.

Three Israelis were also killed in what was the deadliest cross-border strikes from #Lebanon since Israel launched its ground invasion.

The deaths, which follow the killing of another Thai worker in a mortar strike in October near the border with Lebanon, have prompted questions over why workers are being deployed to areas so close to the conflict.

The Hotline for #Refugees and #Migrants, an Israeli organisation that supports migrant workers, said authorities had put them in danger by allowing them to work along the border without proper protection.

Thai workers have been among the foreign nationals worst affected by the conflict. Before the war, about 30,000 Thai nationals were working in Israel, mostly in agricultural jobs, where the salaries offered are much higher than back home. https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2024/nov/01/middle-east-crisis-live-netanyahu-says-ability-to-counter-threats-from-lebanon-key-to-any-ceasefire-deal?CMP=share_btn_url&page=with%3Ablock-672466928f086f851f570906#block-672466928f086f851f570906

Today in Labor History June 6, 1982: Israel invaded Lebanon, remaining until June 6, 1985. The war was led by Ariel Sharon, who later became prime minister, despite the Kahan Commission later finding him culpable for the Sabra and Shatila massacre, which killed up to 3,500 Palestinian refugees and Lebanese Shiites. By the end of the war, Israel had lost over 650 soldiers. However, up to 2,400 PLO militants and 1,200 Syria soldiers were killed. And as many as 20,000 civilians were killed during the war.

About the refuges and warmongers

Bild/Foto

As a result of the wars unleashed by the U.S. after September 11, 2001, 38,000,000 civilians were displaced.
This is the second highest result in world history. Only World War II resulted in more refugees.
Direct military aggressions, the so-called "war on terror" which led to the creation of ISIS, and economic strangulation have all led to disastrous consequences for the people of a number of states in the Middle East and North Africa, forcing ordinary people to flee their homes, cities, villages and states to other countries.

According to a report https://t.co/MLXyekTZTQ by the Watson Institute for International Studies (an interdisciplinary research center at Brown University, Rhode Island, USA) and with the assistance of Boston University:

1. #Afghanistan - 5.9 million refugees
2. #Pakistan - 3.7 million refugees
3. #Yemen - 4.6 million refugees
4. #Somalia - 4.3 million refugees
5. #Philippines - 1.8 million refugees
6. #Libya - 1.2 million refugees
7. #Syria - 7.1 million refugees

The report is based on data from 2001 to 2020 + some data collected in 2021.
It is based on the UN data, U.S. documents and information from public sources.

However, the report itself states that 38,000,000 is a very conservative estimate and in reality, the figure can reach from 49,000,000 to 60,000,000, which actually reaches the figures of World War II.

...

To these processes can be added the huge number of refugees from #Ukraine after the U.S.-backed coup d'état and civil war that broke out there.
