[38C3] It’s TOSLINK, over long Distance Fibre.

If you’ve owned a CD player or other piece of digital audio gear manufactured since the 1980s, the chances are highly to has a TOSLINK port on the back. This is a interface that sends I2S digital audio data down a short length of optical fibre, and it’s designed to run between audio gear & an external DAC.

https://blog.benjojo.co.uk/post/sfp-experiment-ultra-long-range-toslink

TOSLINK is a ancient technology in optical fibre terms, with a lowish data rate and plastic fibre, but consider for a minute whether it could be adapted for modern ultra-high-speed conenctions. It’s what [Ben Cartwright-Cox] has done, and he delivered a talk about it at the recent 38C3 event in Germany.

It’s an interesting experiment, but perhaps the most value here is in what it reveals to us about the way optical networking systems work. Most of us don’t spend our days in data centres, so that’s an interesting technology to learn about.

<https://youtu.be/3qojgJGtTos>

If you’ve cast you eye over any fibre networking equipment recently, you’ll be familiar with SFP ports. These are a standard for plug-in fibre terminators, and they can be had in a wide variety of configurations for different speeds, topographies, and wavelengths. They’re often surprisingly simple inside, so he wondered if he could use them to carry TOSLINK instead of a more conventional network.

And it worked, with the simple expedient of driving an SFP module with an LVDS driver to make a differential signal. There follows a series of experiments calling in favours from friends with data centre space in various locations around London, finally ending up with a 140 km round trip for CD-quality audio.

Update: I found an affordable Chromebook that should do the job for now, and I'm gonna take my Mac back home and wipe the entire thing and reinstall the OS. She doesn't have anything of substance that she needs to save to the Cloud, but I'm going to double check her documents etc. before I do that.

Thanks everybody for your advice! We'll see how this saga continues...

I don't have a ton of followers on this account, so I would love if people would boost this for reach :

I need #tech advice from #computer people who also have #aging parents.

I think it's time for me to replace my mom's laptop with something that she can't kill. Or, if she kills it, something I can replace each time for less than $500.

I'm wondering if a netbook type of device would work? I have no idea what's available in that realm anymore.

I am loathe to get her something in the #Google 'verse because fuck Google. And boy howdy do I *not* want to go back into #Windows with her. That is my least favorite realm in which to play tech support.

However, if there is something out there that would suit her needs and not give me as many headaches, and it happens to be Google or Microsoft, and I can get it for less than $500, I will consider it.

Right now, she has *my* 2020 M1 #MacBook Air, because she killed *her* 2020 M1 MacBook Air with viruses -- and by spilling coffee on it.

It is still sitting on my workbench because no tech guys in town would touch it. All of them said that she needed to buy a new machine.

I loaned her my machine knowing full well that eventually, she would message me to let me know that it had "all these viruses!" on it.

That day was today.

I have no goddamn idea where she goes online to pick this stuff up, but the trashy email lists she's addicted to and Facebook are the two main suspects.

So my main question is: is there a senior-proof, laptop-style machine that I could get for her that would be more of a walled garden and might cause me fewer headaches so I can stop her ruining these expensive #Apple machines?

A side question would be: if we keep her in the Appleverse, is there a way I can spy on her? Is there something that I can install so I can see remotely what she's doing? I am the Admin on this machine and I believe she just has regular user privileges.

I know that's a radical invasion of privacy, even if I get her permission, but if she's going to keep ruining expensive laptops, I need to know where she's going and how she's messing them up. It would rock to be able to log into them remotely to try to fix them. (Is that even a thing?)

The only advantage to her having a Mac is I know them the best, and it does play nice with her phone. Also I can see all of her devices on Find My. But as she never travels with her laptop, I don't think she needs an Apple laptop anymore.

My sister and I got her a 10th generation iPad that works with a Bluetooth keyboard for her birthday last October. I was hoping that she would switch some of her behaviors over to that, because I can keep it more locked down. But nope.

I'm really at a loss for how to proceed as she ages. She considers herself tech savvy, and I don't want to have to keep gently shaming her for going to these fucking awful sites and picking up computer diseases.

She hates using her iPhone (13 Pro) for Facebook, email, or banking. I'm pretty sure that banking on a laptop with viruses on it is how she got scammed last year, prior to me switching out her machine. 😬

I appreciate advice from people who have dealt with this with aging relatives. Thanks for reading.

The problem with the modern world is that every pic of the LA fires I see (and I am not seeking them out) looks fake. It is nearly impossible, at a glance, to tell the difference between a picture of reality and something artificially generated. Consequently, you start to doubt EVERYTHING just as the vultures want you to.

Over 3 Million Mail Servers without Encryption exposed to Sniffing Attacks.

As scans from the IT-security threat monitoring platform Shadowserver show, 3.3 million hosts are running POP3/IMAP services without TLS encryption enabled and expose usernames & passwords in plain text when transmitted over the Internet.

https://www.shadowserver.org/what-we-do/network-reporting/vulnerable-pop3-report/

#pop3 #imap #mailservers #exposed #sniffing #tls #it #security #privacy #engineer #media #tech #news
ShadowServer is now notifying mail server operators that their POP3/IMAP servers do not have TLS enabled, exposing users unencrypted usernames and passwords to sniffing attacks.

"This means that passwords used for mail access may be intercepted by a network sniffer. Additionally, service exposure may enable password guessing attacks against the server," Shadowserver said. "If you receive this report from us, please enable TLS support for IMAP as well as consider whether the service needs to be enabled at all or moved behind a VPN."

The original TLS 1.0 specification and its successor, TLS 1.1, have been used for nearly two decades, with TLS 1.0 being introduced in 1999 and TLS 1.1 in 2006. After extensive discussions and the development of 28 protocol drafts, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) approved TLS 1.3, the next major version of the TLS protocol, in March 2018.

In a coordinated announcement in October 2018, Microsoft, Google, Apple and Mozilla said they would retire the insecure TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 protocols in the first half of 2020. Microsoft began enabling the latest version, TLS 1.3, by default with Windows 11.

The map shows IMAP and POP3 mail servers without TLS.

Over three million POP3 and IMAP mail servers without TLS encryption are currently exposed on the Internet and vulnerable to network sniffing attacks. Almost 900,000 are based in the U.S., another 560,000 and 380,000 in Germany and Poland, the organization found and adding: “We see around 3.3M such cases with POP3 & a similar amount with IMAP (most overlap). It's time to retire those!” You can check out vulnerability reports for both POP3 email servers and IMAP email hosts on the Shadowserver Foundation site.

IMAP and POP3 are two methods for accessing email on mail servers. IMAP is recommended for checking emails from multiple devices, such as phones and laptops because it keeps your messages on the server and synchronizes them between devices. POP3, on the other hand, downloads emails from the server, making them accessible only from the device where they were downloaded.

The TLS secure communication protocol helps secure users information while exchanging and accessing their emails over the Internet through client/server applications. However, when TLS encryption is not enabled, their messages contents and credentials are sent in clear text, exposing them to eavesdropping network sniffing attacks.

ShadowServer advised all email users to check with their email service provider to be sure that TLS is enabled and the latest version of the protocol is being used.

That orange pi cluster workstation laptops with openssi actually works for me as a project given that I am interested in clusters and have been looking for a better workstation laptop but have been having trouble seeing how to afford it...
And frankly it would prob suffice given the way I like to use computers.
The question becomes how hard is this gonna be, is there broader appeal and is anyone else doing this, and do I need it soon or can I afford to wait for the orange pi 6 to come out whenever that will be?

Could be cool.

It would be interesting to make a 64GB RAM workstation laptop by putting 4x Orange Pi 5's in an ethernet cluster with OpenSSI or something...
It wouldn't game but it would do a number of things we'll and cheaply/efficiently.

38C3: Save your Satellite with these 3 Simple Tricks.

BEESAT-1 is a 1U cubesat launched in 2009 by the TU of Berlin. It has redundant computers onboard, so when the first one failed in 2011, it just switched over to the second. And when the backup failed in 2013, well, the satellite was “dead” — or rather sending back all zeroes.

https://media.ccc.de/v/38c3-hacking-yourself-a-satellite-recovering-beesat-1

#beesat1 #satellite #recovering #space #science #it #engineer #media #38c3 #tech #news
Getting the job done required debugging the firmware remotely [like 700 km remotely]. Because it was sending back all zeroes, but sending back valid zeroes, that meant there was something wrong either in the data collection or the assembly of the telemetry frames. A quick experiment confirmed that the assembly routine fired off very infrequently, which was a parameter that’s modifiable in SRAM. Setting a shorter assembly time lead to success: valid telemetry frame.

Then comes the job of patching the bird in flight. [PistonMiner] pulled the flash down, and cobbled together a model of the satellite to practice with in the lab. And that’s when they discovered that the satellite doesn’t support software upload to flash, but does allow writing parameter words. The hack was an abuse of the fact that the original code was written in C++. Intercepting the vtables let them run their own commands without the flash read and write conflicting.

Of course, nothing is that easy. Bugs upon bugs, combined with the short communication window, made it even more challenging. And then there was the bizarre bit with the camera firing off after every flash dump because of a missing break in a case statement. But the camera never worked anyway, because the firmware didn’t get finished before launch.

Challenge accepted: [PistonMiner] got it working, and after fifteen years in space and ten years of being “dead”, BEESAT-1 was taking photos again. What caused the initial problem? NAND flash memory needs to be cleared to zeroes before it’s written, and a bug in the code lead to a long pause between the two, during which a watchdog timeout fired and the satellite reset, blanking the flash.

This talk is absolutely fantastic, but may be of limited practical use unless you have a long-dormant satellite to play around with. I can nearly guarantee that after watching this talk, you will wish that you did.

I imagine living on island or somewhere like that and having a business around owning a small epyc cluster with cxl or whatever and a Chinese 6G connection in the future could be a cool, enjoyable way to live.

CDC detects Bird Flu Mutation in Human, amid new Infections in Cats. [🦠 :ahovercat:]

The ongoing spread of bird flu in the United States has alarmed experts — not just because of human cases causing severe illness, but also due to troubling new instances of infections in cats.

https://www.cdc.gov/bird-flu/spotlights/h5n1-response-12232024.html

#h5n1 #birdflu #virus #mutation #pets #cats #infections #pandemic #us #cdc #healthcare #engineer #media #science #health #tech #nature #news
Instead, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the mutations were "likely generated by replication of this virus in the patient with advanced disease," emphasizing that no transmission of the mutated strain to other humans had been identified.

Several experts contacted by AFP cautioned that it was too early to determine whether these changes would make the virus more transmissible or more severe in people.

Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, explained that while the mutation might help the virus enter cells more easily, additional evidence [such as animal testing] would be needed to confirm any effect on transmissibility.

Moreover, similar mutations have occurred in previous critically ill patients without leading to broader outbreaks. "It's good to know we should be looking out for this," Rasmussen said, "but it doesn't actually tell us, [Oh, we're this much closer to a pandemic now]."
[ImageSource: Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC)]

A sample of the virus found in a critically ill patient in the United States has shown signs of mutating to better suit human airways, although there is no indication it has spread beyond that individual, authorities report.

An analysis posted by the CDC revealed that a small percentage of the virus in the patient's throat carried genetic changes that could increase the virus's ability to bind to certain cell receptors found in the human upper respiratory tract.

Importantly, the agency noted that these changes have not been detected in birds – including in the backyard poultry flock believed to have been the source of the patient's initial infection.

Earlier this month, officials announced that an elderly Louisiana patient was in "critical condition" with a severe H5N1 infection. And now, a updated @CDCgov technical report on the Louisiana case is out. There are low frequency mutations in HA that indicate adaptation in a human host [specifically this human host].

Windows 11 Installation Media Bug causes Security Update Failures. :microsoft:

Microsoft is warning of an issue when using a media support to install Windows 11 [version 24H2], that causes the operating system to not accept further security updates.

http://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-24h2#issues-might-occur-with-media-which-installs-the-october-or-november-update

#microsoft #windows #update #failures #it #security #privacy #engineer #media #tech #news
"When using media to install Windows 11, version 24H2, the device might remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates," Microsoft is warning. "This occurs only when the media is created to include the October 2024, or November 2024, security updates as part of the installation," the company also explains.

The bug does not impact security updates applied via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog website and does not occur when the latest December 2024 security update is used.

Microsoft is currently working on a permanent fix and recommends that media-based Windows 11 24H2 installations use the December 2024 security update, released on December 10, to avoid encountering subsequent updating problems.

The installation media issue is added to a long string of problems that impacts 24H2, the latest major feature update for Microsoft's operating system, which was released earlier this year to offer enhanced security, usability and performance.

16 Chrome Extensions attacked in Large-Scale Credential Theft Scheme.

A attack campaign has compromised at least 16 Chrome browser extensions, exposing over 600k users to data & credential theft. This targeted extension publishers through phishing emails that mimicked official communications from the Chrome Web Store.

https://www.cyberhaven.com/blog/cyberhavens-chrome-extension-security-incident-and-what-were-doing-about-it

#google #chrome #it #security #privacy #engineer #media #tech #news
Cyberhaven, a IT-security firm specializing in data loss prevention, was among the impacted firms and the first to publicly disclose its compromise. The attack occurred on December 24 and involved phishing a company employee to gain access to their Chrome Web Store admin credentials.

According to Cyberhaven, the attackers compromised the “single admin account for the Google Chrome Store” and managed to publish a malicious update to their popular Chrome extension. This update, deployed on Christmas Day, was designed to steal sensitive user data, including passwords, session tokens, Facebook account credentials and cookies.

The malicious extension, version 24.10.4, remained active for over 31 hours before being detected and removed from the Chrome Web Store. “Our security team detected this compromise at 11:54 PM UTC on December 25 and removed the malicious package within 60 minutes,” the company’s disclosure read.

Cyberhaven immediately released a legitimate update (version 24.10.5), hired Mandiant to develop an incident response plan and also notified federal law enforcement agencies for investigation. The company has confirmed that its systems, including CI/CD processes and code signing keys, were not compromised.

38C3: Lawsuits are Temporary [Glory is Forever].

The last year, 37C3 covered how a group of hackers discovered code that allegedly bricked public trains in Poland when they went into service at a competitor’s workshop. This year, the same group is back with tales of success, lawsuits and appearances in the Polish Parliament.

https://media.ccc.de/v/38c3-we-ve-not-been-trained-for-this-life-after-the-newag-drm-disclosure

#polish #trains #bricked #it #security #engineer #media #tech #38c3 #news
You’re not going to believe this, but it’s hilarious.

The short version of the story is that [Mr. Tick], [q3k] and [Redford] became minor stars in Poland, have caused criminal investigations to begin against the train company, and even made the front page of the New York Times. Newag, the train manufacturer in question has opened several lawsuits against them.

The lawsuit alleges the team is infringing on a Newag copyright — by publishing the code that locked the trains, no less! If that’s not enough, Newag goes on to claim that the white hat hackers are defaming the company.

What I found fantastically refreshing was how the three take all of this in stride, as the ridiculous but incredibly inconvenient consequences of daring to tell the truth. Along the way they’ve used their platform to speak out for open-sourcing publicly funded code, and the right to repair — not just for consumers but also for large rail companies. They are truly fighting the good fight here, and it’s inspirational to see that they’re doing so with humor and dignity.

If you missed their initial, more technical, talk last year, go check it out on media.ccc.de. And if you ever find yourself in their shoes, don’t be afraid to do the right thing. Just get a good lawyer.
