Text from article: I don’t see chaos when I examine Musk's actions. I see the realization of a radical ideology that a particular cadre of tech plutocrats have pushed for years. Not all of them call it the Network State, but many of them do. While some portray it as a path to decentralized governance, it's true goal is to concentrate power in the hands of tech billionaires and their systems. Just look at the news. While Robb appears to see Musk’s destruction as necessary, I find it virulently anti-democratic. Most Americans have never heard of the Network State. They certainly didn’t vote for it. Perhaps there's merit in having a public conversation about whether our nation is built to survive the 21st century. However, the idea of a foreign-born billionaire imposing a new form of governance without the consent of the American people seems immoral and risky.

This is something that I don’t really have a model to understand. There’s a sort of technological frontier element to this that’s a little frightening. We don’t know what he’s going to do with data. Reporting is inevitably focused on canceled grants, dismissed researchers, bans on certain forms of communication, on and off-again bans on travel, grant review processes halted. ...Reporting has a hard time stepping back and evaluating the systemic picture, goals and inevitable outcomes. If you shut down cell respiration in an organism, the organism will die. And that’s a decent model for what’s happening in these organizations. Only it’s not just cell respiration – it’s every other foundational life process, along with whole digits and limbs simply being removed all at once and carted off for disposal. My point is simple. We – and I’ve been guilty of this myself – get pulled into each strand of the story: travel, comms, paused grants. What’s important is this bigger picture. It has to be seen as such. They’re shutting down medicine/disease research in the federal government and the government-run and funded ecosystem of funding for most research throughout the United States. It’s not hyperbole. That’s happening. You can’t try to stop something unless you understand it. There’s that final point at which the body dies. It becomes a corpse. It can’t be revived.

The GSA is currently controlled by DOGE and they’re the ones currently breaking leases on federal offices around the country and trying to sell off, at least as of earlier this week, hundreds of federal buildings including the Departments of Justice, Labor and Health and Human Services. It asked DOGE for an “assessment of the legal basis” of Altik’s vision for the agency and said that DOGE staffers would need security clearances to access agency data. That set off a back-and-forth that culminated in a showdown at USADF headquarters... Altik purportedly said that if the board didn’t provide waivers for security clearances, he would have the board fired... At one point, DOGE staffers allegedly approached a GOP appointee on the USADF board, incorrectly told him that everyone else had been fired, and asked him to implement their vision. He refused. After all that, on Feb. 24, the complaint says that the Presidential Personnel Office told Brehm that he had been fired from the board. PPO told the agency days later that it had appointed Pete Marocco, by that time well-known for putting a stranglehold on USAID, as board chairman. In the meantime, the original board had named fellow board member Brehm... as president of USADF... USADF board members determined that Marocco had been illegally appointed – he was an imposter as board chairman. The board also appointed Brehm as President, and notified Congress of the same. There’s no law that authorizes an acting chairman for USADF, they determined, and the President needs to nominate a replacement for Senate confirmation. It all came to a head on Wednesday, when Marocco appeared at USADF headquarters with DOGE staffers.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) — the government’s human resources wing that has been transformed into a Musk cut-out — had initially said responses were voluntary. But in an update to its privacy impact assessment (PIA) last Friday, OPM removed wording describing responses as “explicitly voluntary.” The new PIA states, “The consequences for failure to provide the requested information will vary depending on the particular email at issue.” President Donald Trump has also said that federal employees who do not respond could lose their jobs. The scramble to respond to Musk’s email has led to inefficiencies for federal workers, including at the Dept of Veterans Affairs (VA)... Another employee at the agency told HuffPost that their managers became “mired in daily meetings to discuss ... how it was affecting employees and overall morale, and addressing whether or not any of this is legal… I’d say it cost us at least a full day’s productivity, if not more.” Musk’s ability to simultaneously email all federal workers was described as “illegal” by a federal judge last week in a lawsuit brought by the American Federation of Government Employees. The Atlantic reported that members of the GSA team known as 18F were informed their roles had been “abolished as part of an agency reduction-in-force.” Among the team’s achievements was an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) program that allowed taxpayers to file directly with the agency for free instead of paying for filing software from Intuit TurboTax. 18F employees were also responsible for maintaining the government’s weather alerts and forecasts service. But on Friday, February 28th, the FAA announced that it had issued SpaceX a new license to authorizing Starship Flight 8 despite the fact that the investigation into the January explosion was still ongoing. Now maybe Whitacker was just terribly unreasonable. And maybe it made perfect sense to give the go-ahead for another Starship launch only a few weeks after the other explosion. But it seems very reasonable to ask whether Musk’s de facto control over the FAA has led to more lax oversight of his rocket launches. These questions are reasonable and inevitable when you’re in effect running the agency that regulates your rocket launches. Again, the facts currently available don’t prove anything in themselves. But they raise more than enough questions to press for more information about who’s making decisions to keep the skies of the Caribbean safe, and whether reality-star-turned-Transportation-Secretary Sean Duffy is fulfilling his commitments to the American people.
