Major media organisations still use the word "island" most frequently to describe Taiwan

"Yet, the most popular noun, island, also serves as a way to avoid making a more straightforward claim of its own. By choosing the noun island, outlets can effectively sidestep the question of Taiwan’s status entirely."

In a truly dystopian era, a whitewashing of existing media considered 'negative' or questionable by the reigning administration would no longer be searchable or findable, and only media that sustains and reinforces the administration allowed to filter down to the public via data search results.

Through administrative actions, targeted news would disappear and not be accessible in any way that might put officials in legal jeopardy or allow honest analysis.

Launch day flier for The Secret Life of Data featuring a quote from Nick Couldry: "Smart, extremely well-informed, and highly recommended."

New study: "The #OpenScience, #patent-free nature of the project enabled a large number of collaborators to provide in-kind support…By making all #data immediately available and ensuring that all compounds are purchasable…without the need for materials transfer agreements, we aim to accelerate research globally along parallel tracks…We hope that this can serve as an alternative model for antiviral discovery and future #pandemic preparedness."

Over the past year or so, I've been struggling to articulate exactly why the practice of #data #protection has frequently felt like a defeatist slog. A few days ago, I read an amazing piece by Zvi Mowshowitz (#thezvi), and it helped to define a form for all the thoughts swirling in my head.

It's really very simple: The current approach most of us have towards data protection and #privacy does not motivate anyone towards positive action that meaningfully protects data or privacy. Instead, we're encouraged to spend cycles on pointless privacy #theatrics, so that we can signal to others and ourselves how much we all care about privacy.

This is a broken model, and I've got some ideas for how to fix it.

I really think this is one of my better pieces, so if you're in this space (or interested) have a read and let me know your thoughts.

I posted it on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7047855109925429249/

Fascinating analysis from the Economist: “In the four days after Elon Musk took the keys to Twitter, Republican members of Congress collectively gained around 470,000 followers. The opposite was true for Democrats in both chambers. Their House and Senate representatives lost 420,000 followers.”
