Just a day later, she found the babies scattered and squeaking, their mother tragically hit by a car. Her first night with her partner turned into a rescue mission, feeding those two orphaned hoglets all through the night. #Nature #Hedgehogs

⚠️The first US Bird Flu Death is a stark Warning.⚠️

A Louisiana patient is the first person in the US to die as a result of H5N1 infection. The Louisiana health department noted that the person who was infected was over the age of 65 and had underlying medical conditions, which made the person particularly vulnerable to severe disease.

Without sustained human-to-human transmission or other dangerous changes to the virus, the risk to the general population remains low [at this time]. But, both the CDC and Harris emphasized that people who work with birds and other animals are at greater risk of infection and should take precautions.

According to data collected by the WHO, there have been 954 documented cases between 2003 and 2024. Of those, 464 were fatal, leading to a fatality rate of about 49 percent among documented cases.

A 13-year-old girl in Canada also developed severe disease from an H5N1 infection in November and required intensive care, intubation and the use of the life-support therapy extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The teenager is, fortunately, recovering, according to a medical report published December 31 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

[With the continued spread in birds and other animals, the virus has more opportunities to adapt to humans. Health experts have criticized the US handling of the outbreaks and not doing more to curb the spread of the virus.]

No 10 blocks beaver release plan as officials view it as ’Tory legacy’

Is this just petty or is it a case of the experts - in this case Natural England, not being listened to?

My first book for the #PolymathReadingChallenge (6. marine biology)

Not a very jolly book to start the year on, but it was definitely fascinating. It traces the 1858 expedition to find the great auk - 14 years after the last known specimens were hunted down in Iceland.
The author recounts the expedition and the effects it had: the birth of the concept of human-caused extinction, and the beginnings of environmental conservation.
Poor great auks, though.

The cover of the book by Gísli Pálsson, titled "The last of its kind: The search for the greak auk and the discovery of extinction." The cover is blue and it features a drawing of the penguin-like great auk bird.

A huge wave of ice and water flowed down the Sjoa River in Heidal on Sunday afternoon. The weather phenomenon is called an ice drift or ice front, and spectator Anders Skogum has never seen such a large ice drift before: – It simply came like a tidal wave.

Removed this large Fire Salamander from the well.

It either lived there (the well is mostly dry due to a leak) or it got syphoned into it with today's heavy #rain. It was resting on top of the only bit of rock that stood above the water surface.

Any advice on how/where to release this fella? I know they need access to water so I might need to find a stream or pond of sorts in the vicinity.
