Addressing climate change is too expensive, they said. “Spain’s apocalyptic floods show two undeniable truths: the climate crisis is getting worse and Big Oil is killing us”

Agreed. What shall we do stop this happening?

Nature Positive
Australia's collapsing ecosystems declared a 'critical infrastructure'

Australia has destroyed and degraded nature. The remaining collapsing ecosystems are declared a 'critical infrastructure'. This new system of governance to organise life is framed as a 'Nature Positive' policy with the help of a large consulting business.

The remaining nature is now a market not a common good and has no rights (Rights of Nature laws). The ‘more-than-human-worlds’ becomes a market of 'ecosystem services' to serve a few of the human species. Nature is now a mere 'essential infrastructure' like roads, highway, sewers, sewage etc.

#hedgehogs ‘near threatened’ on red list after 30% decline over past decade. The #mammals were once common across #Europe but #urbandevelopment has pushed them towards #extinction
While hedgehogs were once common across Europe, and were until now listed as of “least concern” on the red list, they are being pushed towards extinction by urban development, intensive #farming and #roads, which have fragmented their #habitat. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/oct/28/hedgehogs-near-threatened-red-list-decline-over-past-decade #environment #ecology #gardens #wildlife #nature

First flowers out in early October on the patch of sun orchids (Thelymitra pauciflora - or adjacent) just behind the house at home in Corunna, NSW. I first noticed a handful of flowers out the kitchen window post 2020 bushfires - with a slight adjustment to lawn mowing I now have 150+ plants! Quite a few interesting variations out this year so not 100% sure on the ID now - or if there are actually multiple species growing together.

Caladenia carnea (pink fingers) variations growing in light forest near the Wonboyn River, NSW. These plants are much more more uniform in flower size and shape than similar forest populations of this widespread orchid further south in East Gippsland VIC - and also out slightly later.

I've never seen any other small Caladenia orchids at this location - which may be part of the reason for less variations compared to populations near Genoa, VIC where there are 4-5 similar Caladenia species out in early spring - possibly leading to some degree of hybridisation.

Early #FungiFriday cause camping! Ganoderma shelf #fungi #FantasticFungi Unreal looking 👀 & on the ground away from the redwoods ❣️#nature not a #mushroom Looks like an alien life form to me, my #mastodon friends 🤓
An alien life form on the floor of the redwood forest, white outer rim, yellow, and then red Ing over to the ground all very shiny and plastic looking! It’s a ganoderma shelf fungi.
Sideways view showing the bright white rim. Rising up from the ground, amongst wood, sorrel, green clover, like leaves.
This shows the Shel fungi rising up from the ground with its red top spilling over. It’s about 6 inches wide at its widest diameter. And about 3 inches thick.😘

Wrote a blog post about my most recent research adventure, trying to track down animal species mentioned in a folktale. It was a wild ride, and I learned a lot about why it is woth doing your homework on animal tales.

First duck orchid of the spring starting to take flight near Genoa, VIC. These large duck orchids (Caleana major) are fairly common around Mallacoota most years but are usually out in larger numbers in October. Only saw the one early flower on the one plant this trip.

I am working on this "folktales about misunderstood animals" collection for children. However, I am accidentally accumulating a bunch of tales about misunderstood animals that are only fit for adults* 😄

I don't think my publisher would go for it, but now I want to work on it anyway...

(* no, not THAT way, just in terms of violence or complexity.)

Folktale niche that I keep running into:

Quaint and adorable explanations for horrifying natural phenomena.
So far I have had cicadas growing "little umbrellas" (parasitic fungus) and a wasp rewarded by God with grubs turning into his children (wasp that puts eggs in live grubs). 😬 😬

#FolktaleMoment of the day:

According to a Lepcha folktale, bats are the only creatures that don't have to pay taxes 😄 That's because the King of the Birds and the King of the Rats couldn't decide who should tax them.

"So that is why the bat is free from all taxation. Everybody in the world pays some sort of revenue, even we human beings, but the bat is free and doesn’t."

I guess the bat took the "tax" out of "taxonomy"...

😄 🤷‍♀️ 🦇

Today's folklore research WTF:

The Russian tale "Prince Ivan, the Firebird, and the Grey Wolf" has been translated to English in the 19th century by Edith Hodgetts as

"The Grey Wolf and the Golden Cassowary"

And now I can't not imagine the prince trying to wrangle

A damn FLYING CASSOWARY

(This is why you double check translations, people)

😬 😆

by Finnish photographer Lassi Rautiainen documented the unusual friendship between a female grey wolf and a male brown bear, spotted every night for ten days straight, spending several hours together. they would even share food with each other. #Photography #Photographie #Fotografie #Nature #Wildlife #NaturePhotography #WildlifePhotography

The third animal presented itself today 😄 I went to the lake, and suddenly a large carp poked its head out, looked at me, moved its mouth, and let me pet its back. 😄
I am ready for my quest!

Walking home late last night I saved a drunk bumblebee from the bike path and then shepherded a small frog off the road. I am waiting for the third animal before I embark on a quest where they will come to my aid. 😄

Looks like my next folktale collection is going to be about misunderstood animals 🥰😊 What are your favorite misunderstood, misrepresented, or underappreciated animals?

I just realized I haven't shared sandstone #photos. Sandstone is fascinating and #beautiful and forms various crazy shapes. Endless possibilities for both large and small scale #photography. Photo is titled 'Among the Waves'.

Good morning. 😴⏰☕

9 July 2024

A few weeks ago, I received a reply on Mastodon from a guy who was upset because I updated a post that I made months ago. It seemed to bother him greatly that I corrected a spelling error on an old post. When I notice errors, I do take the time to correct them, and I use old content. I explained what I was doing to the guy, and it seemed to bother him even more because he felt the need to try and insult me online, so I blocked him. But I wonder, I won, won, wonder, why it bothered him so much 🎶.

Hmmm ... Charlie is bugging me and Ben is barking, it must be close to mealtime.

The reflection creates a symmetrical effect, with the real grass above and its mirror image below, divided by the waterline. The vibrant colors and natural beauty make this photograph aesthetically pleasing. To #tag this beautiful #Nature with #Graffitos is so #perverted and #vile. They have no #Respect for #anything. I don't think that's funny.
