Streetartwall. On a narrow exterior wall between two stores, a small self-painted paste-up with an elderly couple in comic style has been stuck somewhat hidden. The two seniors are sitting on a wooden bench directly above a yellow letterbox and holding hands. The figures both have googly eyes of different sizes and are wearing old-fashioned clothes; he is holding a walking stick. They both look at the viewer. A wonderful idea, because nobody expects to see art in this niche between a bar and a pharmacy. The photo is a bit older, and paste-ups never last very long. Hopefully it was there for a long time.

A developer could hack into the Apple Lightning to HDMI dongle and run Doom directly on the accessory. The Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter features a custom Samsung SoC with a 400MHz ARM Cortex-A5 core and 256 MiB of DRAM.

The dongle should be enough to run Doom, which requires a 386 processor and 4MB of RAM. Apple put an SoC inside the dongle because the USB 2.0 protocol that Lightning used did not have the bandwidth required to run HDMI. So, it compressed the data from the Lightning device and then used the chip inside the adapter to decompress it for viewing on HDMI displays. Although Doom runs well already, nyan_satan said the game has yet to hit 60 FPS on the dongle with proper resolution. However, reimplementing the function that populates frames into the framebuffer can vastly improve performance, allowing the game to reach the desired quality on the Apple accessory.
[ImageSource: nyan_satan] The adapter runs a simplified version of iOS, but since it doesn’t have persistent storage, the developer used their MacBook to load firmware with a file system. They also use the laptop's connection for controls, but aside from that, everything runs directly on the dongle. The developer said he plans to release the software behind this Doom project as a package in the future, allowing anyone with a jailbroken iOS device to run it and try it for themselves. In the meantime, he plans to improve it further, like introducing sound output and finding a way to attach a controller to the dongle so you can play Doom without needing a Mac.

Christopher Wood's The Embedded Portrait: Giotto, Giottino, Angelico (2023) is a fascinating if at times pretty dense discussion of how patrons & others found their way into religious art in C13th-14th. It includes a number of excursions away from its central concern, and while I would be hesitant to recommend it to someone just interested in the history of art, it is a thoughtful if complex & 'academic' bit of art history.

On our way out to the Bad Lands of South Dakota, Barry convinced us to stop off at Okaton, SD which is a ghost town. Barry did the research ahead of time to see where the ghost towns will be in a 50 mile radius of our planned destinations. Barry enjoyed this place a ton. I must say It was fascinating. Okaton, South Dakota, is a small, abandoned ghost town located along U.S. Highway 14 in Jones County. Once a thriving railroad stop in the early 20th century, the town slowly declined as rail travel diminished and agriculture became less sustainable in the area. Today, Okaton is a fascinating roadside attraction for travelers seeking a glimpse into the past. The town features a collection of weathered, decaying buildings, including an old general store, a schoolhouse, abandoned homes, and rusting farm equipment scattered across the landscape. Faded signs and peeling paint give the town an eerie, time-frozen atmosphere. Dr. Sofyan Taya was a theoretical physicist who studied optoelectronics for practical applications. He was born in the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza in 1971, and tragically he was killed on Dec 2, 2023 in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza.

Dr. Taya was born and raised in the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza in 1971. He began his education at a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) school in the camp. He then went on to study physics and, in 1994, received his bachelor’s degree at the Islamic University of Gaza, and received his doctorate in 2007. He was the physics department head at Islamic University of Gaza from 2008 to 2011, and earlier 2023, was appointed to the president of the university.

Dr. Taya’s research has focused on light and utilising it in specific structures called optical waveguides and photonic crystals for measurements and sensing, with one potential goal of using them in medical bio-sensors. Just in 2020, he spent a few years at the University of Montreal, Canada as part of a fellowship to study sensitivity enhancement of optical waveguide sensors. Additionally, he has a number of published papers on improving solar cell function with organic dyes. In 2021, Dr. Taya was named one of the top 2% of researchers worldwide by an Elsevier and Stanford University study.

On December 2, 2023, Dr. Taya and his family were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Jabalia refugee camp. It is absolutely tragic to see such talent and intellect wasted through the indiscriminate bombing of the Israeli military. Imagine how many more scientists, poets, engineers, and artists the world would have if our efforts were put into rebuilding Gaza instead of razing it to the ground? The +15,000 Palestinians that have been killed to date are not just numbers, but each person has a story, like Dr. Taya. Their deaths could have been prevented if Israel stopped their relentless brutal assault against all of Gaza.

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 209.

It you like a deep art history dive into a single painting then you'll enjoy Peter Springer's Hand & Head: Ernst Ludwig Kirchners’ Self-Portrait as Soldier (2002). Using a discussion of this self-portrait to examine Kirchner's political & aesthetic commitments, Springer offers a wide contextualisation & as a result a fascinating depiction of Kirchner as an (expressionist) artist. Well illustrated & concise, its a great read.
