Federal Courts Are Cracking Down on the #InternetArchive

A federal court recently said the Internet Archive is not protected by fair use doctrine.

In September, a federal appeals court dealt a major blow to the Internet Archive—one of the largest online repositories of free #books , media, and software—in a #copyright case with significant implications for publishers, #libraries , and readers

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 191.

Nicolas Padamsee's novel of radicalisation & terrorism, England is Mine (2024) is both an 'easy' read & a downbeat deception of how the far right can radicalise young men online. Its a compelling narrative of gradual dehumanisation & how the disaffected can find themselves competing to retain the 'respect' of extremists on-line. Its by no means a comfortable read, but offers a warning about the impact of loneliness on young men.

New instance, new #introduction!

I'm a woman in my 30s. I was born in #Québec City, I moved to #Vancouver for my first real job as a #translator and, a few years ago, I moved to #Ottawa with my husband so we could afford a house.

I mostly write in English, but don't hesitate to toot at me in #français!

I've worked in multiple fields... my favourite were my years with Library and Archives #Canada, which I absolutely loved. I now work in #agriculture.

I love #videogames, mostly #FFXIV right now. I have an #ebike. I love #books and #cooking. I miss #travel.

I'm very much pro (vaccine, science, choice, mask, etc.).

Come say hi 👋

I have been told that it is customary to do an #introduction post, so here I go.

I love #cats, have 2; #squid (arsehole) and #newton (fatso).

#music is important to me and I have something playing most of the time.

#sewing and #knitting are my hobbies as well as #gardening. I sound like an old woman! Oh wait I am!!

Love #books have way too many. Too many on #baking and #crafts

Oh I talk too much and laugh way too loud - might also find me dancing in the aisle of my local supermarket.

xx

Wow - a friend just told me that The Purple Couch Bookstore in Andover, MA actually has a monthly silent book club!

‘Celebrity’ ‘Authors’ - individual quotes

Maybe children’s books tend to be recommended by ‘adults’, promoted by people and newspapers with a financial interest and bought by their parents based on the author name? Just a thought and maybe something to discourage (not the book buying of course).

A Very Short History of the Israel–Palestine Conflict by Ilan Pappe, 2024

An indispensable guide to understanding the Israel–Palestine conflict, and how we might yet still find a way out of it.

The devastation of 7 October 2023 and the horrors that followed astounded the world. But the Israel–Palestine conflict didn't start on 7 October. It didn't start in 1967 either, when Israel occupied the West Bank, or in 1948 when the state of Israel was declared. It started in 1882, when the first Zionist settlers arrived in what was then Ottoman Palestine. Ilan Pappe untangles the history of two peoples, now sharing one land. Going back to the founding fathers of Zionism, Pappe expertly takes us through the twists and turns of international policy towards Israel–Palestine, Palestinian resistance to occupation, and the changes taking place in Israel itself.

The consolations of philosophy

In my latest blog post I talk about three books that help me to understand, resist and find hope: The Unaccountability Machine, Stories Are Weapons, and The Dispossessed.

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 189.

If you're interested in Matisse and/or portraiture, then John Klein's Matisse Portraits (2001) will be a treat. Exploring the meaning of portraits & self-portraits & then relating this to Matisse's paintings & drawings, Klein constructs a really interesting account of the artist's method & how his interests informed his portraiture. Lavishly illustrated & well presented, this 20 year old book is well worth seeking out.

Children seem to be reading books for pleasure less than they were:

So the Q. is: do they return to reading later in life (I know, I did; I hardly read at all at 18, but by my late 20s was reading much more);

or are they finding other forms of reading offer equal pleasure & value (on screen perhaps?).

Or are they rejecting reading books for pleasure altogether?

Perhaps reading is just changing & they will they (re)discover the joy of books later?

"The people stand within the ruins of society, a jail invented to outlive them all. The door is open. They can leave or fall instead to squabbling and thence new slaveries. The choice is theirs, as ever it must be."

The Palestine Laboratory, How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation around the world (2023)

"How Israel makes a killing from the occupation.
Israel’s military industrial complex uses the occupied, Palestinian territories as a testing ground for weaponry and surveillance technology that they then export around the world to despots and democracies. For more than 50 years, occupation of the West Bank and Gaza has given the Israeli state invaluable experience in controlling an “enemy” population, the Palestinians. It’s here that they have perfected the architecture of control. "

I don't write horror, but there is a strong #Halloween vibe in this novel, which won an IRDC award for best humor in 2013.

When I was putting together my "Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths" manuscript, I was constantly told that it is not a sellable concept for a book - because "people want to read their favorite myths", and not unkown ones.

Now the reviews are trickling in, and every reviewer highlights how exciting it is to find unknown myths about the well-known gods and heroes.

🤷‍♀️

(Still looking for an English language publisher, btw.)

I've decide to serialize my next novel, Captain's Away! on Substack:

It’s 1000 years in the future. The Earth is a distant memory. And the Doucettes have seen better days.

It’s not every day your space station is blown to bits beneath you in the opening volley of a senseless war. In the aftermath of this attack, the Doucette's find themselves careening from one fantastic space adventure to another as their lives are upended in ways they can barely comprehend.

Today is looking up :D Shooting promo videos for social media for the mythology book. At the Pompeii Café in Budapest :)

I drank like 5 cups of latte during the shoot.

I can see the gods now.

Me (woman in her thirties, red hair, glasses) sitting in the corner of a café, drinking a cup of latte. The coffee table has a mosaic theme, and there is Horatius quote on the wall behind me. My book, The Silent Goddess: Forgotten Greek and Roman myths, is on the coffee table. The cover is blue, with art featuring a goddess surrounded by stars. I am wearing a white and blue Roman outfit and a blue hairband.

So, I showed up to my book launch at the literary festival today. Telling Greek and Roman myths, appropriately dressed because why not :)

Then I was told 3 minutes before stage time that... my #mythology book is not being sold at the festival.

Because... by Hungarian law, you can't sell #lgbtq content within 200 meters of a school.

So 8pm, at an adult literary event, I couldn't actually sign. Greek mythology. Because there is a school building nearby.

By the way, said "Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths" book is looking for an English lanuage publisher ;)

It is coming out in Hungary on the 16th from Trend Kiadó.

It contains 25 little known stories from Greek and Roman mythology - including variants of myths not included in most popular collections. Sourced and researched, and re-told by a storyteller.

If anyone has any suggestions, let me know :)

Yass, publishing milestone:

My Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths book is advertised with the CW "Non-traditional content." 😂

(Context: According to a new Hungarian law, any book containing LGBT+ content has to be labeled as "non-traditional". Including the famously traditionally straight Ancient Greeks, apparently.)

This morning on the tram:

A little old lady in a traditional Transylvanian dress (skirts and petticoats, blouse, head scarf, etc.) was sitting on the tram, completely absorbed in a book.

The book was an erotic thriller titled "In the bed of the mafia"
